It's an important day, but my eyes are bloodshot...what should I do?
Hello, I'm Ryutaro Natsume, an impression designer/cosmetic surgeon.

My eyes are bloodshot even though it's an important day...I often receive this question not only from patients, but also from colleagues and friends.
There are many causes of bloodshot eyes.
Here are some of the reasons why.
◯Allergies
It may cause redness associated with allergic conjunctivitis.
Recently (September), ragweed pollen has been flying around, which can make allergy symptoms worse.
Antihistamine eye drops (such as Allegron LX) are often used, but steroid eye drops may be used if symptoms are severe.
◯Infection
It can occur with viral or bacterial conjunctivitis.
The progress is monitored by administering antibiotic eye drops, etc. Steroid eye drops may also be used in combination.
Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis caused by adenovirus is highly contagious, so it is important to take proper infection control measures to prevent it from spreading to others. It is especially common in the summer.
Inflammation inside the eye, such as uveitis, can also cause redness, and in such cases the area around the pupil is particularly prone to redness.
Dry eyes
Severe dry eyes can cause damage to the corneal epithelium.
Treatment that targets the tear film that protects the cornea, such as hyalein eye drops or diquas eye drops, is necessary.
Contacts
The oxygen permeability rate varies depending on the contact lens. Generally, cheaper contact lenses have a lower oxygen permeability rate, while more expensive contact lenses tend to have a higher oxygen permeability rate.
In order to deliver oxygen to oxygen-deficient tissues, the surrounding blood vessels may dilate. This can be improved by increasing the oxygen permeability of the contact lenses.
Poor fitting of contact lenses can cause roughness and make eyes more susceptible to rubbing and redness. Changing to contact lenses that fit the shape of your cornea can sometimes improve the condition.
Giant papillary conjunctivitis, a severe allergic conjunctivitis common among contact lens wearers, can also cause redness. In this case, contact lenses should be discontinued and treated with steroid eye drops.
◯ Swelling
When you have a hangover or eat ramen as a final meal, your body becomes swollen.
Similarly, the whites of the eyes become swollen and bloodshot.
Steroid eye drops can improve the condition. Naphazoline, which has a vasoconstrictive effect, is also effective.

I hope you understand that when it comes to dealing with eye congestion, the treatment varies greatly depending on the cause.
Whether it is one eye or both eyes is also an important diagnostic point.
Inflammation inside the eyes, such as uveitis, is particularly urgent. We recommend that you see an ophthalmologist rather than making your own diagnosis.
This is the quickest way to improve congestion.
We also provide treatment for redness after cosmetic medical treatments, making differential diagnoses like this.
