The white of the eye extends into the pupil? What is a pterygium?
Hello, I'm Ryutaro Natsume, an impression designer/cosmetic surgeon.

This time, we will talk about pterygium, which is a cosmetic concern.
(From the Japanese Ophthalmological Society website)
A triangular conjunctiva (the white of the eye) invades the nasal side of the cornea (the black of the eye) and is called a pterygium.
It occurs when there is an abnormal increase in tissue under the white of the eye.
Ultraviolet rays and dry eyes are thought to be some of the causes.
Some people experience bloodshot eyes and are concerned about their appearance.
If the cornea penetrates to the center, it will cause distortion of the cornea, and you will notice distortion and decreased vision. In this case, surgery is required.
Steroid eye drops may be prescribed, but there is no other treatment other than surgery.
Surgery for pterygium for cosmetic reasons alone is not recommended, especially in young patients.
If surgery is performed on young people while the lesion is still small, recurrence is likely.
The surgery involves removing the abnormal tissue that has invaded the cornea by pulling it away from the cornea. The missing area is then covered by moving the surrounding conjunctival tissue. The surface of the cornea is scratched and stitched, causing severe pain, lumps, and redness after surgery. The redness in particular can last for about three months.
Since the shape of the cornea changes, some people may experience some discomfort in their vision until they get used to it.
Therefore, unless you are already suffering from severe symptoms such as distortion or difficulty seeing, there are cases where you will not be satisfied with the results after surgery.
If left untreated and the condition progresses too much, distortion may remain even after surgery, making it difficult to determine the timing of surgery.
If you have pterygium, it is important to visit an ophthalmologist regularly to check if the distortion (astigmatism) is getting worse.
