Worried about dark spots on the whites of your eyes? Remove them with a laser
Hello, I'm Ryutaro Natsume, an impression designer/cosmetic surgeon.

We often receive consultations from patients who are concerned about spots on the whites of their eyes.
In conclusion, spots on the whites of the eyes can be removed with a laser, but this is only offered as a private treatment at a very small number of eye clinics.
Medically known as conjunctival melanosis, it commonly occurs in middle-aged to elderly people. It is a brownish-red conjunctival tumor that results from the abnormal proliferation of melanocytes. It is thought to be caused by ultraviolet rays, heredity, and aging.
It is said that it rarely becomes malignant, and malignant transformation is possible if it is widespread, raised, enlarged, invades the cornea, invades the peripheral conjunctiva or the back of the eyelid, or if there are dilated blood vessels supplying the melanosis.
Treatment for conjunctival melanosis includes surgical excision or laser treatment.
In both cases, postoperative redness continues for about 1-3 months after surgery and about 1-2 weeks after laser treatment.
Similar to removing moles from the skin, heat is applied to the surface with a laser and the pigment is removed by rubbing it off with a cotton swab.
We use an argon laser with coagulation properties. It is a safe laser that is often used in health insurance-covered medical treatments for diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, retinal tears, and retinal detachment.
After surgery, antibiotics will be used to prevent infection and steroid eye drops will be used to reduce swelling.
It is important to differentiate between pinguecula and melanoma. If it is a pinguecula, it is caused by abnormal collagen proliferation and is treated with steroid eye drops or surgical removal.
Melanoma, also known as malignant melanoma, is a malignant tumor that is prone to metastasis and requires early treatment.
If rapid, widespread, elevated, or expanding lesions are observed, we consider the possibility of melanoma and avoid laser treatment, instead performing surgical excision and pathological examination.

Summary
This summer we explained how to remove stains from the whites of your eyes.
Because it is difficult for us to perform an ophthalmic evaluation at our hospital, we are unable to treat spots on the whites of the eyes, but this treatment is available at some eye clinics.
There is a possibility that it may be pinguecula or melanoma, so please consult an ophthalmologist first.
