Is the white of the eye growing over the black part? What is pterygium?

Ryutaro Natsume

A dual-specialty doctor with a background in plastic surgery, bridging cosmetic surgery and ophthalmology. At the university hospital, he performed numerous high-difficulty cases, primarily focusing on eye and facial bone surgeries, cultivating precise techniques grounded in anatomy. He prioritizes achieving both aesthetic beauty and functional safety, offering customized treatments around the eyes that incorporate ophthalmological expertise. He actively utilizes not only incisional surgery but also non-invasive procedures like hyaluronic acid injections. By carefully assessing each individual's condition and unique appeal, he provides bespoke treatments that guide patients toward naturally harmonious, well-defined eyes.

Hello, I'm Ryutaro Natsume, an image designer and cosmetic surgeon.

This time, we'll discuss pterygium, which is also a cosmetic concern.

(From the Japanese Ophthalmological Society website)

A condition where the triangular-shaped conjunctiva (the white part of the eye) invades the nasal side of the cornea (the black part of the eye) is called pterygium.
It occurs due to abnormal growth of the tissue beneath the white of the eye.
Ultraviolet rays and dry eyes are considered to be one cause.

Some people experience redness inside their eyes or are concerned about how it looks.

When the condition progresses to the central area of the cornea, it causes corneal distortion, leading to noticeable distortion and decreased vision. In such cases, surgery is performed.

Steroid eye drops may be prescribed, but there is essentially no treatment other than surgery.

We generally do not recommend surgery for pterygium, especially in younger patients, solely for cosmetic reasons.

Surgery performed on young patients when the lesion is small tends to result in recurrence.

The procedure involves peeling away and removing the abnormal tissue that has invaded the cornea. The resulting defect is covered by relocating surrounding conjunctival tissue. The corneal surface is injured and sutured, leading to significant postoperative pain, foreign body sensation, and redness. The redness, in particular, may persist for about three months.

Some people may notice a slight difference in how things look as the shape of the cornea changes, and this may be noticeable until they get used to it.

Therefore, unless you are already experiencing severe symptoms such as distorted vision or difficulty seeing, you may not be satisfied with the results after surgery.

If left untreated for too long, even surgery may not fully correct the deformity, making the timing of surgery difficult.
Individuals with pterygium should visit an ophthalmologist regularly to ensure that their astigmatism is not worsening.
