What causes upturned eyes?

First, "slanted eyes" refers to a condition where the outer corners of the eyes (the outer eye corners) point upward, making the entire eye appear sharp and slanted.
This is related to one's innate bone structure, muscle distribution, the position of the lateral canthal ligament, and the shape of the lower eyelid.

Almond-shaped eyes can sometimes give a harsh impression, but softening them can create a gentle and soft atmosphere.

・Droopy Eye Surgery (also known as Glamorous Line Surgery)

Lowering the outer part of the lower eyelid (especially the outer corner) improves upturned eyes.

There are primarily three approaches.

・Transconjunctival approach (incision)

Advantage: No incision is made in the skin, so no scar remains.

Disadvantages: Tendency to regrow slightly, risk of inverted eyelashes

 

• Cutaneous approach (incision)

Advantages: Can be applied even if you naturally have inverted eyelashes, less likely to revert

Disadvantages:

A small incision is made under the eyelashes, leaving a barely noticeable scar.

Post-surgery tear troughs become smaller, making it harder to inject hyaluronic acid into the tear troughs.

・Non-incisional method (buried suture technique)

Advantage: Easy to revert

Disadvantage: Prone to regression

・Lateral canthal tendon transfer

Lateral canthoplasty involves temporarily detaching the superficial portion of the lateral canthal ligament and repositioning it to correct upturned eyes.

Advantage: The angle of the upturned eyes themselves can be adjusted.

Disadvantage: The outer corners of the eyelids may appear slightly lifted.

Drilling holes into the facial bones and securing the implant deep within the eye socket eliminates this drawback, but it requires intravenous anesthesia or general anesthesia.

I personally do not recommend combining these procedures. Droopy-eye correction surgery pulls downward, while lateral canthal tendon transfer pulls sideways.

Lateral canthoplasty inherently involves cutting the outer corner of the eye, so it is always performed in combination with lateral canthoplasty.

Combining droopy-eye surgery with lateral canthoplasty is recommended as it minimizes regression.

Some people desire doll-like drooping eyelids, and this trend is gaining attention on social media,

”The perception that droopy-eyed surgery is ”dangerous” or ”unnatural" is prevalent.

While it's true that overdoing it can look unnatural, the amount of change can be adjusted.

By making only natural changes, you can achieve an elegant, soft, and natural impression!
