Hello,Image Designer/Plastic Surgeon Ryutaro Natsumeis

My eyelashes are poking my eyes and hurting. This time, I'll talk about ingrown eyelashes.

Some people get regular eyelash perms because their lashes get in their eyes.

What effects can ingrown eyelashes cause?

Ingrown eyelashes are strong and can scratch the cornea if they come into contact with it.

When the cornea is stained with a special dye, the injury will stain like this.

If the wound is too severe,Decreased visual acuityEye painThe light is blinding.congestionSymptoms such as these appear.

Some people wear soft contact lenses constantly to prevent eyelashes from getting in their eyes, but wearing them all the time except when sleeping can cause contact lens problems, making fundamental treatment necessary.

Eye drops or eyelash removal may be used to manage the condition, but surgery is required in severe cases.

Ingrown Eyelash Treatment Methods

① Buried Method

While it may be effective for mild inverted eyelashes with minimal downtime, it often recurs.

For those who are afraid of surgery but still want to improve the angle of their eyelash growth, this is recommended.

②Incision Method

We generally recommend this option.

Make an incision approximately 3mm away from the eyelashes and adjust the direction of eyelash growth outward.

Excess skin, orbicularis oculi muscle, and fat may be present and will be removed as appropriate.

A slight crease resembling a double eyelid may form at the incision site, but the incision line will be hidden, so the scar will become less noticeable.

Similar to double eyelids, outward-facing eyelashes also create a visual effect that makes the eyes appear larger.

The Difference Between Insurance and Out-of-Pocket Treatment

Insurance-covered treatment focuses primarily on preventing eyelashes from touching the eye and causing functional impairment.

HoweverEven within insurance-covered medical treatmentWe meticulously perform internal fixation to prevent recurrence and pay close attention to achieving beautifully angled lashes, as if they've been permed. There are also doctors who perform excellent surgeries.

The biggest difference, in my opinion, is that it can be combined with other eye treatments simultaneously.is.

Surgery for inverted eyelashes involves an incision in the lower eyelid, allowing dark circle treatment (such as fat removal or the Hamra procedure) to be performed through the same incision.

Additionally, procedures such as epicanthoplasty, double eyelid suture surgery, and lateral canthoplasty can be performed simultaneously, allowing you to consolidate your downtime into a single period.

Of course, if your eyelashes don't originally touch your eyes but you wish to change their growth direction, this is not covered by insurance. Therefore, inverted eyelash surgery alone is considered self-pay treatment.

The Difference Between Ectropion and Trichiasis

Ectropion is often mistaken for ingrown eyelashes (medically known as trichiasis).

If eyelashes grow from a location other than the normal eyelash line, it may indicate misdirected eyelashes.

Since the treatment methods differ, I will need to examine you directly.

Will the tear troughs disappear?

The degree of ingrown eyelashes varies, but they often occur due to excessive orbicularis oculi muscle, which causes skin and tear troughs.

Hyaluronic acid injections for tear troughs also add volume, so they can be counterproductive for inverted eyelashes.

Therefore, undergoing inverted eyelash surgery often results in a slightly smaller tear trough.

After surgery, a small amount of hyaluronic acid can be injected into the tear trough to prevent ingrown eyelashes from recurring; however, depending on the scarring, achieving uniform plumping may be difficult.

Inward-growing eyelashes make the eyes appear smaller, but simply correcting them with an eyelash reversal procedure to grow outward makes the eyes look larger and gives a more refined impression.

Please consider whether you can undergo surgery, taking into account the function of your eyes!

Pain, downtime, risks, and price?

Pain:There is a slight stinging sensation similar to when receiving Botox injections under local anesthesia, but once the anesthesia takes effect, there is no pain.

Therefore, surgery is possible without nitrous oxide anesthesia.

Downtime:The swelling peaks around 2-3 days, but it subsides by the time the stitches are removed a week later.

Risk:Scars, regression, asymmetry, etc.

Price:Ingrown Eyelash Surgery - Incision Method: ¥360,580
