Ryutaro Natsume

A dual-specialty doctor with a background in plastic surgery, bridging cosmetic surgery and ophthalmology. At the university hospital, he performed numerous high-difficulty cases, primarily focusing on eye and facial bone surgeries, cultivating precise techniques grounded in anatomy. He prioritizes achieving both aesthetic beauty and functional safety, offering customized treatments around the eyes that incorporate ophthalmological expertise. He actively utilizes not only incisional surgery but also non-invasive procedures like hyaluronic acid injections. By carefully assessing each individual's condition and unique appeal, he provides bespoke treatments that guide patients toward naturally harmonious, well-defined eyes.

Hello,Image Designer/Plastic Surgeon Ryutaro Natsumeis

This time, we'll discuss precautions to minimize swelling after eye surgery.

Please note that precautions may vary slightly depending on the surgeon, so please confirm with them.

Keep the wound above heart level except when sleeping.

Especially on the day itself, attempting to tie your shoelaces while standing can cause blood to rush to your head, increasing the risk of bleeding. Sit down or crouch to tie your shoelaces.

During downtime, lying in bed all the time can make swelling harder to reduce, so sitting on the sofa and watching Netflix or something is best.

◯Cool

Please apply cold compresses to the forehead and around the eyes on the day of the procedure, not directly on the wound.

◯Quit smoking

Smoking impairs wound healing, making the incision site more prone to redness and keloid formation. We recommend refraining from smoking for one month before and after surgery.

◯ Avoid alcohol and high-sodium foods

Drinking alcohol improves blood flow, while high salt intake causes swelling, both of which prolong the duration of swelling.

◯ Avoid excessive exercise

Refrain from doing so for one week after surgery, as swelling may persist.

◯ Bathing and sauna use prohibited

Please refrain from this activity for one week as swelling may persist. Showering, including the wound area, is possible starting the next day.

◯ No looking in mirrors

I might be exaggerating a bit, but during downtime, I just can't help wanting to look in the mirror.

But even if you look, it won't shorten the downtime. It only makes you worry more about whether it will look good.

Especially for double eyelid surgery, avoid actions like unnaturally widening your eyes to check in the mirror, as this can increase the risk of an unintended crease.

◯One month or more after surgery, hot eye mask

After one month post-surgery, applying warmth actually improves blood flow and makes it easier to reduce swelling.

We recommend using a hot eye mask in the morning and before bed, especially after procedures like full eyelid surgery.

◯ Special Edition

This isn't related to swelling, but previously with a patient who had a full incision...

A patient had to be taped in place for a week to prevent double-folding because "the suture thread was prickly"...

Then the double line will become faint💦

We appreciate your efforts, but please don't hesitate to consult us about anything if you run into trouble!

Summary

This time, we explained methods to reduce swelling after eye surgery more quickly.

We incorporate the practice of mixing tranexamic acid into the anesthetic solution during surgery (and in some cases, administering oral tranexamic acid preoperatively), as studies report this helps reduce intraoperative bleeding and postoperative swelling. We strive not only for effective results but also to minimize swelling as much as possible during surgery.
