”Does a master choose his brush?” Using neurosurgical instruments for dark circle treatment?

A dual-specialty doctor with a background in plastic surgery, bridging cosmetic surgery and ophthalmology. At the university hospital, he performed numerous high-difficulty cases, primarily focusing on eye and facial bone surgeries, cultivating precise techniques grounded in anatomy. He prioritizes achieving both aesthetic beauty and functional safety, offering customized treatments around the eyes that incorporate ophthalmological expertise. He actively utilizes not only incisional surgery but also non-invasive procedures like hyaluronic acid injections. By carefully assessing each individual's condition and unique appeal, he provides bespoke treatments that guide patients toward naturally harmonious, well-defined eyes.

Hello, I'm Ryutaro Natsume, an image designer and cosmetic surgeon.

This 16cm-diameter instrument... is indispensable to me during a certain surgery.

The formal name is the ”Ueyama-style Mid-Depth Needle Holder.” Developed and used by Dr. Hiroyasu Ueyama, a renowned neurosurgeon, it is ideal for manipulating minute objects at the end of narrow tunnels.

What on earth am I, who's not a neurosurgeon, using this for?

The correct answer is the reverse Hamura method.

The Hamra technique is a surgical procedure for treating dark circles under the eyes, which involves shifting the fat causing the dark circles downward from behind the eyelid to improve the appearance.

Within the narrow field of view, it is necessary to suture the thin orbital septum membrane, along with the fat pad, to the underlying periosteum.

For patients with difficult-to-lift eyelids, the field of view becomes even narrower, increasing the difficulty. However, the Kamiyama-style mid-depth needle holder enables precise manipulation even in confined spaces.

While trying out various instruments, I came across this surgical instrument.

We are particular about the suture thread we use. The thickness of the thread, the length of the needle, and the curvature of its shape all affect how easily the surgery can be performed.

”They say ”a master craftsman doesn't choose his tools," but in today's world overflowing with quality options, I believe the ability to select the right tools for the job is also crucial for achieving the best performance.

By the way, this needle holder costs over 100,000 yen per piece... and of course, I paid for it myself!

I'm always nervous it might fall and break because it's so narrow at the tip.

I am not yet a master, but I strive to provide meticulously crafted eye surgery down to the finest instruments used during the procedure. I am dedicated to never settling for the status quo and to continuously elevate my skills.
