The platysma muscle has the ability to pull the skin near the jawline downward.
Facial muscles consist of elevators and depressors, and the platysma is classified as a depressor.
The depressor muscles literally exert a strong downward pulling force, which causes sagging.
It is important to appropriately weaken it with Botox.
Strong movement of the sternocleidomastoid muscle can cause vertical lines to appear on the neck, known as platysma bands. These platysma bands can also make the neck appear aged.
The muscle that pairs well with botulinum toxin injections for the sternocleidomastoid muscle is the depressor anguli oris. The depressor anguli oris is the muscle located beneath the corners of the mouth, responsible for pulling the mouth into a downward-turned expression.
Individuals with strong sternocleidomastoid muscle activity often also exhibit strong depressor anguli oris muscle activity, so Botox injections are frequently administered to both muscles simultaneously.
For individuals over 50 with significant skin laxity in the neck, Botox injections into the platysma muscle may worsen sagging.
