As an Assistant Professor, Associate Ward Director, and Chief of Dermatopathology at the university hospital dermatology department, I deepened my expertise through academic presentations and paper publications both domestically and internationally. I have handled a wide range of treatments, from birthmark therapy in children to adult pigmentation concerns, utilizing various lasers and injection therapies, while also contributing to community healthcare. Through encountering numerous cases, I strongly felt the potential and necessity of aesthetic medicine, resolving to pursue further expertise. Building upon my solid dermatological knowledge and meticulous diagnostic skills, I value treatments that gently support each individual's skin while bringing out its inherent beauty.

Is there anything I can do to prevent hair loss?

I received a request from TBS and N-Sta regarding that theme, so I'll write an extended version.

I am Dr. Aya Hayama, a board-certified dermatologist.

What you need to know to avoid hair loss in the futureScalp Skincare Habits You'll Want to Keep

Many people spend time on facial skincare but neglect scalp care. However, hair grows from follicles on the scalp, and these follicles are greatly affected by scalp conditions like blood flow, sebum balance, and UV damage. When follicle function weakens, hair becomes thinner, hair loss increases, and it can lead to future thinning. In other words, to protect your hair, it's crucial to treat your scalp as "skin just like your face" and make daily care a habit.

20sMy hair is thick and strong, and I hardly notice any thinning. However, irregular lifestyles, excessive coloring, and lack of sleep during this period can accelerate future hair follicle aging. EspeciallyHair matrix cells are strongly influenced by growth hormone secreted during the night.Staying up late poses a significant risk of disrupting the hair growth cycle.

30sAs people enter this stage, work and family stress increases, and changes in sebum secretion and fluctuations in hormone balance can lead to noticeable hair loss for some individuals. In men, cases of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) originating from male hormones may begin.Women are more prone to temporary hair loss, such as postpartum hair loss. Preventive care like UV protection and scalp massage becomes effective starting from this period.

40s and olderNumber of hair folliclesThe body begins to shrink, and the tendency for hair to become finer becomes pronounced.will become.Women experience a loss of hair elasticity and body due to declining estrogen levels, while men notice progressive thinning becoming more apparent during this period. At this stage, the scalp tends to become drier and more prone to dandruff, making moisturizing care essential. Furthermore, if you notice increased hair loss, it is advisable to incorporate topical minoxidil and lifestyle improvements as soon as possible.

50s and olderHair dye chemicals can sometimes worsen scalp problems,Low-irritation hair care productsIt is recommended to choose products containing ingredients that promote blood flow and antioxidant activity. Additionally, since age-related decreases in blood flow and oxidative stress suppress follicle activity, combining scalp moisturization with a diet or supplements containing antioxidant ingredients is also effective.

As for my daily routine,In the morning, apply a scalp UV spray to your part and crown, then gently massage to promote blood flow.At night, pre-wash your scalp with lukewarm water around 38°C (100°F), then gently wash using the pads of your fingers with a low-irritation shampoo. After washing your hair, be sure to thoroughly dry your scalp with a hair dryer.Apply scalp lotion or hair growth tonic and gently massage.Using a scalp scrub or cleansing gel once or twice a week to reset pore impurities helps prevent excess sebum and styling product buildup.

These habits also have medical backing. For example,Performing scalp massage increases blood flow around the hair follicles. It has been reported that UV rays increase the activity of hair matrix cells. Furthermore, UV rays are known to damage the DNA of hair follicles,Photoaging of the scalp can contribute to hair loss and thinning hair.Furthermore,Deficiencies in trace elements such as iron and zinc have been linked to alopecia in numerous studies.A balanced diet and appropriate supplementation as needed are also essential.

Ultimately, your current habits determine your future hair volume. Just like facial skincare, consciously focusing on "cleansing, protecting, and moisturizing" your scalp daily will make a significant difference in 10 or 20 years. While some aspects of hair aging are unavoidable, you can expect to slow down its pace.

Please try incorporating it into your daily life.
