As an Assistant Professor, Associate Ward Director, and Chief of Dermatopathology at the university hospital dermatology department, I deepened my expertise through academic presentations and paper publications both domestically and internationally. I have handled a wide range of treatments, from birthmark therapy in children to adult pigmentation concerns, utilizing various lasers and injection therapies, while also contributing to community healthcare. Through encountering numerous cases, I strongly felt the potential and necessity of aesthetic medicine, resolving to pursue further expertise. Building upon my solid dermatological knowledge and meticulous diagnostic skills, I value treatments that gently support each individual's skin while bringing out its inherent beauty.

Pico Toning is one of our most popular treatments.

Following up on our previous discussion, we will now explain the treatment method and indications for toning with Pico.

I am Dr. Aya Hayama, a board-certified dermatologist.

Pico Toning uses low-output laser shockwaves to reduce melanin granules, thereby diminishing age spots, freckles, and...Liver spots and dullnessThis treatment minimizes the appearance of such concerns. Pico Toning, with its high melanin absorption and strong reaction to melanin pigment, can pulverize even small pigment particles that conventional lasers couldn't fully destroy. This allows it to target small spots that previous laser treatments couldn't eliminate.

Pico Toning gradually breaks down and expels melanin pigment with each treatment session. A key feature is that you can experience results with fewer sessions than conventional lasers. Furthermore, this laser treatment can be used not only for facial spots and freckles, but also for darkened areolas and nipples.

liver spots
Liver spots refer to light brown pigmented patches that appear on both cheeks, under the nose, the chin, and the forehead.
It is characterized by indistinct contours and appears symmetrically on both sides, commonly seen in women in their 30s and 40s and beyond.
For general skin spots, the primary treatment involves concentrating high-power laser energy onto melanin pigment to destroy it. However, this method is contraindicated for melasma because it may worsen the condition.
Liver spots are sensitive to stimulation. Therefore, stimulating the melanocytes in liver spots with strong lasers can activate melanin production and potentially worsen the condition. *Similarly, be cautious as patting, rubbing, and UV exposure can also cause worsening. Avoid stimulation as much as possible.
And this Pico Toning treatment can cover these risks.
This treatment uses a low-output laser to deliver uniform and broad-area irradiation, enabling the removal of melasma without stimulating melanocytes.
As a groundbreaking treatment method for melasma that works without oral medication, it is attracting significant attention within the aesthetic medicine industry.

Pico Toning uses low-output lasers, minimizing skin irritation. With each session, skin turnover is activated, allowing you to experience gentle yet noticeable results. While some individuals with skin texture concerns may see changes after just one treatment, most people notice pigment issues like dark spots or melasma gradually fading after approximately 10 to 20 sessions.

Additionally, it reacts to black pigment and also targets sebum and comedones clogging pores. This action helps clear sebum blockages, tightens pores, and promotes smoother skin texture. Furthermore, the laser stimulation acts on fibroblasts in the dermis, supporting collagen production. This improves skin firmness and elasticity, addressing fine lines and sagging. Pico Toning is a treatment that addresses pigmentation concerns like dark spots and melasma while also contributing to skin texture improvement. Through consistent treatment, skin tone becomes more even, aiming for a youthful, translucent complexion.

Treatment frequency varies by clinic, but we recommend sessions every 2 to 4 weeks at our clinic. Waiting too long between treatments can make it difficult to notice results, while excessive treatments may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Therefore, receiving treatment at an appropriate pace is crucial. However, the optimal treatment interval varies depending on your skin condition. Please consult your physician directly for a detailed treatment plan.

Pico Laser Review
The “pico” in pico laser refers to a unit of time meaning one trillionth of a second.
Pico Toning is a treatment that delivers energy pulses in picoseconds, achieving instantaneous irradiation 1,000 times faster than the previously fastest nanosecond lasers. Because the treatment time is extremely brief, it causes minimal discomfort and can be performed without anesthesia.
Furthermore, since it precisely targets and breaks down only the melanin pigment using shock waves, it causes minimal thermal damage to surrounding skin. This reduces the likelihood of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and scabbing, resulting in virtually no downtime.
BIANCA CLINIC's Pico Toning utilizes the PICOSURE® laser from Cynosure, Inc., the leading manufacturer of medical lasers in the United States. PICOSURE® is FDA-cleared for a wide range of applications including pigmentation, wrinkles, and acne scars. If you are seeking pigmentation treatment with minimal downtime or wish to experience advanced pigmentation therapy, please feel free to consult with us.

Other Pico Laser Treatments

Pico lasers are medical laser devices considered effective for skin concerns such as age spots, melasma, and freckles. Pico Toning is one of the three irradiation modes available with pico lasers. In addition to Pico Toning, there are Pico Spot and Pico Fractional irradiation modes, each differing in their irradiation method and the specific skin concerns they address.

【Pico Spot】Previously introduced
A method that precisely targets skin concerns like dark spots and freckles with high-output laser energy. Powerful shockwaves finely shatter melanin pigment in the skin, effectively addressing deep dark spots, freckles, moles, and tattoos. Compared to the other two irradiation modes, its higher output allows for fewer treatment sessions while still aiming to remove dark spots and freckles.

【Pico Fractional】
A method that attaches a special lens to the tip of the pico laser, concentrating energy into pinpoint spots for irradiation. It creates microscopic cavities in the skin's dermis layer, aiming to improve skin quality through the skin's natural healing process. It can help remove fine wrinkles and enhance skin elasticity, while also addressing concerns like acne scars and skin texture irregularities.

At Bianca Clinic, we also offer combination treatments that pair Pico Toning with Pico Spot or Pico Fractional, tailored to your skin type and goals. If you wish to enhance the effectiveness of your spot treatment, minimize your treatment duration, or have not achieved desired results with conventional laser treatments, please consult with us. Our comprehensive treatments can deliver greater satisfaction.

Here's a personal musing from me, a dermatologist...

Pico toning may cause depigmentation (white patches). If treatments are performed too frequently or at high power levels, melanocytes can be damaged, potentially resulting in temporary or permanent white patches.

We recommend continuing treatment while awaiting skin recovery through proper diagnosis and examination.
