Hello!
Designing natural beauty with trust.
I am Masataka Fujihashi, a board-certified plastic surgeon.
The epicanthal fold is a structure where skin overlaps from the inner corner of the upper eyelid toward the inner corner of the eye.
A characteristic commonly seen in Asians, it is a key factor in determining the impression of the eye area.
First, it's important to know that how close or far apart your eyes appear—such as with crossed eyes or wide-set eyes—is influenced not only by the innate position of the eyeballs but also by the presence or absence of the epicanthal fold.
Furthermore, the degree to which it appears as such varies depending on the tightness of the Mongolian fold.
⸻
■ Differences in Impression Caused by Mongolian Folds
Mongolian folds are the folds around the eyes. This part significantly influences the overall impression.
● When the Mongolian fold is pronounced
• Slightly childish or innocent impression
• Eyes appear narrower and tend to look wide-set
• Tends to create a soft atmosphere

● When the Mongolian fold is small/weak (congenital)
• Mature yet slightly sharp impression
• Tendency for eyes to move closer together
• Tends to create a cool/strong atmosphere

In other words, if too much of the epicanthal fold is removed during epicanthoplasty,
• Centripetal features become overly emphasized
• Tends to look harsh or aged
• The overall balance of the face is disrupted, making it appear unnatural.
This can lead to concerns such as...
In fact, quite a few people come in for counseling specifically because they are concerned about this point.
⸻
■ What is Mongolian Fold Formation (Correction of Epicanthoplasty)?
Mongolian fold formation is,Surgery to reposition overly exposed inner corners of the eyes to their natural position and refine facial appearanceis.
• Concerned about a more rounded face after epicanthoplasty
• I want to soften the harsh impression around my eyes
• The tear mounds are too prominent, causing discomfort.
This is suitable for such cases.
Even for those who originally have fewer Mongolian folds,
✔ I want to create a cute impression
✔ I want to adjust the distance between my inner corners
This is sometimes done for the purpose of...
⸻
■ Two types of surgical procedures
● Reverse Z Method
Reconstructs three-dimensional, natural Mongolian folds.
It is suitable for naturally softening the appearance of crossed eyes.
One disadvantage is that scars tend to be noticeable.
● V-Y Method
Strong at millimeter-level adjustments.
Compared to the reverse Z, it has a more rounded finish.
It is also effective in cases of significant left-right asymmetry.
The scar is barely noticeable.

⸻
■ Downtime and Progress
• Surgery time: 20 to 40 minutes
• Swelling: Approximately 3 days (mild edema may last about 10 days)
• Suture removal: 7 days later
• Face washing and showering: Permitted starting the next day
• Eye makeup: The day after suture removal
• Contact: 1 week later~
• Effect: Semi-permanent
⸻
■ On the Dual Change
When performing a Mongolian fold procedure,Parallel type → Tends to be slightly flared。
This is because the Mongolian fold is restored, slightly concealing the inner part of the double fold.
Therefore, preoperative simulation and information sharing between the surgeon and the patient are extremely important.
⸻
■ The shape of the inner corner of the eye affects mental health
Mongolian fold Even a 0.5 to 1 mm change can significantly alter the impression.。
During consultations for revision blepharoplasty, I realize how profoundly the delicate nature of the procedure affects patients psychologically.
In particular,"I think I cut too much.""I can't appear in public," etc.,Such complaints are extremely numerous, making the urge to rush through the revisions all the stronger.
On the other hand, if you feel the changes aren't substantial enough, there's no urgency since you can take your time to make adjustments.
The tricky part is becoming too meticulous, cutting too much → correction → incision → correction... and so on. Negative loopfall into.
Clearly share the goals with the surgeon before the operation,Do not seek excessive change,is the most importantwill become.
⸻
■ Summary
Mongolian foldThis part controls the overall impression of the face.。
That's precisely why,
• Discomfort from excessive cutting at the inner corner of the eye is pronounced
• A slight difference can lead to a significant difference in impression
• Corrections must also take psychological factors into consideration
Mongolian fold formation is a surgical procedure designed to restore balance that has been disrupted and bring back the person's natural, inherent charm.
Let's take our time, do it right, and work together to find the perfect inner corner for your eyes.
