The epicanthal fold is a structure where skin overlaps from the inner corner of the upper eyelid toward the inner corner of the eye.

A characteristic commonly seen in Asians, it is a key factor in determining the impression of the eye area.

First, it's important to know that how close or far apart your eyes appear—such as with crossed eyes or wide-set eyes—is influenced not only by the innate position of the eyeballs but also by the presence or absence of the epicanthal fold.

Furthermore, the degree to which it appears as such varies depending on the tightness of the Mongolian fold.

■ Differences in Impression Caused by Mongolian Folds

Mongolian folds are the folds around the eyes.This part significantly influences the overall impression.

● When the Mongolian fold is pronounced

• Slightly childish or innocent impression

• Eyes appear narrower and tend to look wide-set

• Tends to create a soft atmosphere

 

● When the Mongolian fold is small/weak (congenital)

• Mature yet slightly sharp impression

• Tendency for eyes to move closer together

• Tends to create a cool/strong atmosphere

 

In other words, if too much of the epicanthal fold is removed during epicanthoplasty,

• Centripetal features become overly emphasized

• Tends to look harsh or aged

● Reverse Z Method

Strong at millimeter-level adjustments.

Compared to the reverse Z, it has a more rounded finish.
