What is an auricular cartilage transplant?
Auricular cartilage transplant is a surgery to make the tip of the nose higher and sharper by transplanting ear cartilage to the tip of the nose. The transplant position and amount of cartilage can be fine-tuned to create a natural nose. The surgery is generally performed by making an incision from inside the nostrils (closed method), or depending on the condition, an incision between the nostrils (open method). When harvesting ear cartilage, the incision is made in a hard-to-see area such as behind the ear, so the scars after surgery are not very noticeable. Another advantage is that the patient's own tissue (ear cartilage) is transplanted to the nose, so there is less concern about foreign body reactions and allergies.
A wide range of designs are possible, such as pointing the tip of the nose forward, creating a cute upturned nose, or extending the bridge of the nose downward. The cartilage from the ears is harvested with great care so that the ears do not become deformed, so there is little change to the ears after the procedure. Not only does it look natural, but it also feels natural to the touch, so there is little risk of people noticing when they touch it.
What is the difference between ear cartilage grafts and prostheses?
Like auricular cartilage transplantation, there is a procedure that uses a prosthesis to reshape the nose. A prosthesis is medical artificial cartilage made of silicone. You may have a strong image of it being used in cosmetic medical treatments, but it is also a material that is used for artificial heart valves and artificial joints. In rhinoplasty using a prosthesis, an inconspicuous part of the nose is incised and a prosthesis is inserted into the bridge of the nose, just like with auricular cartilage transplantation.
The difference between auricular cartilage grafts and prostheses is that what is inserted into the nose is either the patient's own tissue or an artificial object. The treatment method also varies depending on the patient's ideal nose shape, such as whether they want a high and sharp nose tip or a three-dimensional face with a straight nose bridge, and sometimes a complex approach is used. A natural finish that lasts semi-permanently
Because the transplanted auricular cartilage is not absorbed by the body, once auricular cartilage transplantation is performed, the effects tend to last semi-permanently. On the other hand, hyaluronic acid injections, a popular procedure for beautifying the bridge of the nose, last for about six months to two years, depending on the formulation. Hyaluronic acid injections do not require incisions, so the hurdle of treatment seems low, but there is a big difference in the duration of the effects.

If you are concerned about your nostrils being visible when looking straight ahead, cartilage is transplanted diagonally downward from the nose tip to make them less visible.

■Two surgical procedures that leave inconspicuous scars
Auricular cartilage transplantation is a procedure in which the postoperative scars are not very noticeable, so there is little risk of people noticing that you have had treatment. There are two surgical procedures for auricular cartilage transplantation. The doctor will determine which surgical procedure is most appropriate for the patient after examining the condition of their nose.

In the open method of auricular cartilage transplantation, an incision is made in the nasal columella (between the nostrils) and cartilage is transplanted to the tip of the nose. Because the nasal columella is in shadow and not easily visible, scars are barely noticeable after surgery. The advantage of the open method is that surgery can be performed while directly observing the alar cartilage, soft tissue, fat, etc., allowing for more precise surgery. However, downtime tends to be longer than with the closed method.
[Close method]
In the closed method of ear cartilage transplantation, an incision is made inside the nostril and cartilage is transplanted to the tip of the nose. The incision cannot be seen from the outside, so the advantage is that the postoperative scars are less noticeable. The field of view during surgery is narrower than with the open method.
■The procedure takes about 40 minutes. After the procedure, the patient is fixed in a plaster cast.

Your nose will be immobilized in a cast for 72 hours after surgery. If non-dissolving stitches are used, they will need to be removed one week after surgery. Showers are permitted from the day of surgery, and makeup can be applied once the cast is removed. If stitches are removed, they can be applied from the day after. Severe swelling will subside in about one week, and internal bleeding will gradually subside in about 1 days. *Individual differences may occur.
