Hello! I am Toshiyuki Saiga, Director of Bianca Clinic's Ginza Branch.
For those considering breast augmentation surgery, or those who have already undergone the procedure, some may be concerned: "Will having breast implants prevent me from breastfeeding?"
If you're considering pregnancy or childbirth, changes to your bust and how they might affect breastfeeding are natural concerns. This time, we'll clearly explain the relationship between breast augmentation surgery and breastfeeding.
Breast augmentation surgery does not prevent breastfeeding! There is virtually no impact on the baby.
"Concerns about the impact on the baby," "Anxiety about whether breast milk will come in properly"—such voices are not uncommon. But in fact, it is possible to undergo breast augmentation surgery while preserving your ability to breastfeed.
Here, we will explain in detail why it has little effect on breastfeeding.Breast augmentation surgery is performed while avoiding structures involved in lactation, such as mammary glands and milk ducts. Therefore, it generally does not affect the body's ability to produce or secrete breast milk.
Furthermore, there have been no reports of changes in breast milk composition after breast augmentation or of silicone implant components mixing into breast milk. (As of October 2025)
In other words, the impact on the baby is minimal, and it is possible to undergo breast augmentation surgery while preserving lactation function. Even those considering pregnancy or childbirth need not feel unduly anxious.
How does the method of breast augmentation affect breastfeeding?
Bianca Clinic offers three main types of breast augmentation procedures:
- Silicone Implant Breast Augmentation (Silicone Implant Breast Augmentation / Preserve)
- Condense Rich Fat Injection Breast Augmentation
- Hybrid Breast Augmentation (Silicone Implants + Fat Grafting)
The impact on breastfeeding and the degree of risk vary depending on the method used. For those considering future pregnancy and childbirth, it is important to understand the characteristics of each surgical procedure.

In the case of silicone breast implants
Silicone breast implants are a type of breast augmentation surgery that involves inserting silicone implants into the breasts to increase volume. The main insertion locations are the "subglandular method" and the "subpectoral method."
- Subglandular technique: A method of inserting the implant directly beneath the mammary gland tissue.
- Subpectoral Method: A technique where silicone implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscle.
Neither procedure involves removing or damaging the mammary glands themselves, so breastfeeding function is generally preserved.

For Condensed Rich Fat Injection Breast Augmentation
Condensed fat transfer breast augmentation involves harvesting and refining your own fat, then injecting it into the breasts using a fine cannula. The fat is placed not within the mammary gland tissue itself, but in the spaces between mammary gland tissue—specifically the subcutaneous fat layer and the area around the pectoralis major muscle.
Injecting small amounts into the appropriate layer will rarely damage the mammary glands.
However, if the technique is not sufficiently skilled, it may cause mammary gland compression or blood flow impairment. The outcome and safety of fat transfer breast augmentation depend on the skill of the physician who understands mammary gland structure.

In the case of hybrid breast augmentation
Hybrid breast augmentation is a procedure that combines silicone implant augmentation with fat transfer augmentation. It provides substantial volume with silicone implants while using fat transfer to create a more natural-looking décolletage and breast contour.
Silicone implants are placed beneath the pectoral muscle and secured in a position that does not directly touch the mammary gland. This structure is considered to have minimal impact on breastfeeding function.

When is the best time for breast augmentation surgery? Why after breastfeeding is ideal
There is little concern that breast augmentation surgery itself will affect breastfeeding. However, if you plan to breastfeed in the future, you should pay some attention to the timing of the surgery.
When a woman becomes pregnant, the secretion of female hormones increases rapidly, causing the breasts to temporarily become swollen or increase in size. Therefore, if a woman becomes pregnant after breast augmentation surgery, the development and swelling of the mammary glands may compress the implants, potentially leading to complications such as mastitis.
Especially when larger silicone implants are inserted, pregnancy or breastfeeding can increase internal breast pressure, sometimes causing a strong feeling of pressure or discomfort. For this reason, many women temporarily remove their implants before breastfeeding.
On the other hand, after breastfeeding ends, changes in hormone balance and breast tissue atrophy can alter the shape and firmness of the breasts. Many women experience the following concerns:
- My décolletage has become gaunt.
- The position of the nipple has dropped.
- The balance between left and right has become poor.
These changes are natural, but many women are shocked by the visible changes. Therefore, it is ideal to have surgery after 3 to 6 months or more have passed since breastfeeding ended, once the breasts have stabilized.
At this time of year, not only can you reduce the risk of problems, but it also becomes easier to achieve your ideal design.
There are also benefits to breast augmentation surgery before childbirth.
While there are many benefits to undergoing breast augmentation after breastfeeding, there are actually certain advantages to having the surgery before giving birth.
Once childbirth and childcare begin, it inevitably becomes difficult to find time for yourself. Caring for the baby and breastfeeding drastically change your daily rhythm, making it challenging to secure time for post-operative downtime or hospital visits in many cases.
In that regard, before giving birth, you can adjust your physical condition and schedule at your own pace, making it easier to plan treatment.Additionally, if the shape of the breasts stabilizes after surgery, it may be easier to maintain a natural bust line even after pregnancy and childbirth.
However, if you are planning to become pregnant, it is important to avoid becoming pregnant immediately after surgery. Becoming pregnant before your body has fully recovered may cause pain or discomfort due to breast tenderness and pressure from hormonal changes.
Therefore, it is ideal to wait at least six months to a year before considering pregnancy. By carefully planning the timing, it becomes easier to balance maintaining a beautiful appearance with reducing the burden on your body.
