Completed initial training at Okinawa Prefectural Nanbu Medical Center and Children's Medical Center. Worked in the Department of Radiology at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and at an aesthetic clinic. Encountered high-dose vitamin C intravenous therapy at a seminar by the Intravenous Therapy Research Society. Studied abroad as a Research Fellow at the Riordan Clinic in the United States. Achieved notable accomplishments, including passing the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine's specialist certification exam at the youngest age.

 

Currently serving as a Medical Director of Aesthetic Medicine at BIANCA. The role of a Medical Director of Aesthetic Medicine is to approach healthy beauty by caring for the body from within. This time, I'll continue talking about fasting, following up from last time.

 

I've been asked, "Fasting is trendy, but is it actually good for your health?" My view as a cosmetic medicine doctor is that since the modern standard diet is often excessive, moderately restricting calories through fasting is beneficial for most people's health.

 

Fasting refers to abstaining from food for a certain period of time.

 

While fasting may be strongly associated with weight loss due to its potential to promote fat burning, it also holds significant promise for improving overall health. This includes enhancing the gut's natural healing abilities, promoting stem cell production, and reducing oxidative stress.

 

 

Differences in Effects Based on Fasting Period

 

 

Fasting can be done for extended periods of 5, 6, or 7 days, or for shorter durations of just half a day to one day. The differences in effects based on duration are as follows:

・One-day fast... Improves skin conditions

・2-day fast... improving gut health

・3-day fast... diet

 

As such, the effects obtained vary depending on the duration of the fasting period.Weight loss effects become noticeable after fasting for three days or more. While significant weight loss may not be expected from fasting for just one or two days, giving your internal organs a rest is also important for your body.

 

 

Basic Fasting Method

 

The basic method of fasting involves abstaining from solid food for a period ranging from half a day to several days.

 

Suddenly starting a fast can put strain on your stomach. Therefore, if you plan to go without food for more than one day, you need to establish a preparation period and take steps to gradually acclimate your body to fasting. Additionally, after fasting, do not immediately return to your regular diet. Instead, gradually reintroduce food starting with meals that are gentle on the stomach. The recommended duration for both the preparation period and the refeeding period is the same number of days as the fasting period.

 

For example, when doing a one-day fast, the schedule would be: on the first day, consume gentle foods like miso soup, soup, or rice porridge; on the second day, fast; and on the third day, return to gentle foods.

 

During the fasting period, it is important to stay well-hydrated. Aim for about 2 liters per day, and make a conscious effort to drink fluids frequently.

 

 

What is the best fasting method for beginners?

 

 

Beginners who suddenly attempt long-term fasting may damage their bodies. We recommend starting with shorter periods first.

 

For beginners to fasting, the recommended method is a 16-hour fast. You refrain from eating for 16 hours a day and eat freely during the remaining time. Since sleep time counts toward the 16 hours, if you sleep for 8 hours, you just need to go without eating for 8 hours while awake. A 16-hour fast requires no preparation period.

 

For example, a common approach is to skip breakfast and only eat lunch and dinner. Since it only involves skipping breakfast, I think it's something you can incorporate without too much effort.
