CHARACTERISTICS

Labia Minora Reduction

Labia minora reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the labia minora to correct enlargement or asymmetry, achieving a balanced appearance. The labia minora are thin, fleshy folds located inside the labia majora (the fleshy folds on either side of the vulva), extending from the clitoris around the vaginal opening. Also referred to as “labia,” they serve to protect the urethral opening and vagina.

In reality, there is no standard definition of normal for the size or shape of the labia minora, as they vary greatly from person to person. However, when they are so large that they protrude beyond the labia majora, it can lead to various concerns. These include friction causing pain or itching, as well as a tendency for dirt to accumulate, potentially resulting in odor or irritation. Furthermore, many women become self-conscious about the appearance of their labia minora—its shape, size, or darkening—and struggle to feel confident in their femininity. Labia minora reduction surgery addresses these sensitive concerns and aims to provide a solution. While larger labia are prone to external friction and darkening, removing the darkened areas also offers the benefit of giving the entire vulva a more youthful appearance.

Determination of excision range by physicians with expertise in female genitalia

When considering labia minora reduction, it's crucial to avoid excessive removal. The labia minora naturally serve to prevent vaginal dryness. Removing too much tissue can lead to vaginal dryness and increase susceptibility to conditions like vaginitis. That said, larger labia aren't necessarily better; achieving a balanced shape that preserves their function is key. Reconstructing labia minora once they've been removed is extremely difficult, making it crucial to undergo the procedure with a trusted doctor. At Bianca Clinic, our board-certified obstetrician-gynecologists, recognized by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology, possess deep expertise in the anatomy and function of the labia minora. They will propose an appropriate removal range, so you can feel confident.

No suture removal required, with a clean finish

For labia minora reduction at Bianca, we offer both traditional suture-removal techniques and suture-free methods (the Insuture method). The Insuture method offers several advantages over suture-removal techniques: less bleeding and pain during surgery, and a cleaner, less noticeable scar after the procedure. Downtime is minimal, and wound healing is relatively quick, making this the mainstream technique in recent years. If you would like to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, as well as the associated costs, please feel free to discuss this during your consultation.

Labia Minora Reduction: Care to Enrich Women's Lives

Some women seeking labia minora reduction cite reasons like “my partner asked me to have it done” or "I'm self-conscious about my partner's reaction." However, in reality, very few men actually fixate on the shape or pigmentation of a woman's labia minora. Bianca's belief is that labia minora reduction should be done for yourself, not for your partner. We consider the goal of this procedure achieved when the labia minora are beautifully refined, you are freed from uncomfortable symptoms, and your self-esteem and quality of life (QOL) as a woman are enhanced.

Some individuals are born with naturally larger labia minora, while others may experience enlargement due to sudden hormonal fluctuations during puberty, childbirth, or menopause. Having larger labia minora is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Don't struggle alone thinking "Maybe it's just me..."—please feel free to schedule a consultation. We've received positive feedback from patients who've undergone the procedure, such as "My sense of self-worth as a woman has increased."

If you experience severe odor or itching, see your gynecologist.

Labia minora reduction may make feminine hygiene easier and reduce the buildup of debris, potentially alleviating odor and itching. However, if odor or itching is severe, it could indicate underlying gynecological conditions such as sexually transmitted infections or vaginitis. Notably, odor often originates from inside the vagina rather than the external area.

At Bianca Clinic, staffed by board-certified obstetricians and gynecologists, we may recommend gynecological examinations (such as vaginal discharge tests and cervical cancer screenings) for patients concerned about odor or itching.

Additionally, Bianca offers complimentary vaginal health index measurements. By assessing vaginal pressure, moisture levels, pH levels, and other factors, we can evaluate potential vaginal discomfort and infection risks. If you wish to undergo this examination, please mention it during your consultation.

Simultaneous procedures with labia minora reduction or clitoral hood reduction are also possible.

Bianca Clinic offers a set menu called the “Gynecological Reconstruction BIANCA METHOD,” which combines labia minora reduction, clitoral hood reduction, and accessory skin removal. Clitoral hood reduction addresses a condition where the clitoral hood—the skin covering the clitoris, also known as the "clitoris"—completely overlaps the clitoris. Accessory skin refers to the folds of skin located between the clitoral hood and the labia minora.

For those prone to inflammation due to clitoral hood or enlarged labia minora, those concerned about odor from accumulated debris, or those seeking aesthetic refinement, simultaneous removal of the labia minora, clitoral hood, and labia majora enables comprehensive care for the entire female genitalia. If you have concerns about eligibility or other matters, please feel free to contact us.

Treatment Process

CONTENT OF TREATMENT

Physician's examination and counseling

After our female concierge listens to your concerns about your labia minora and your requests for treatment, a physician will conduct an examination. During this time, we will also explain the treatment details thoroughly, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have. If you wish to combine this treatment with others or request additional tests, please let us know at this time.

Determination of Resection Area and Procedure

Based on the size and shape the patient desires for their labia minora, the physician determines the extent of excision while preserving their function. We proceed with the procedure only after the patient fully understands and agrees to the treatment plan. During the procedure, all staff members, including the physician, are female to ensure privacy and comfort. We use local anesthesia and intravenous sedation to minimize discomfort, but please feel free to discuss any concerns you may have.

Follow-up

After the surgery, we will explain the recovery period, post-operative care (such as showering and sexual activity), and important precautions. If you experience any concerning symptoms after returning home, please contact us promptly.

What is considered a normal size for the labia minora?

There are no definitive standards for the normal size or shape of the labia minora. Even if they extend beyond the labia majora, this is not considered abnormal. If you are concerned about their appearance or experience discomfort, you may wish to consider labia minora reduction.

Are large labia minora congenital? Or is there a cause?

Some individuals are born with larger labia minora, but hormonal imbalances during puberty or childbirth, as well as aging, can easily cause changes in their size and shape.

Is labia minora reduction surgery painful? How long does the post-operative pain last?

During surgery, anesthesia is administered, so there is virtually no pain. Post-surgery, pain may persist for about a week, but it does not interfere with daily activities.

Can I still receive treatment even if my period starts on the day of the appointment?

Yes, it is possible. You can undergo the procedure while using a tampon.

Will it affect future pregnancies and childbirth?

Labia minora reduction surgery will not affect future pregnancy or childbirth, so please rest assured.

Are there any precautions I should take regarding my post-operative care?

Showering is possible starting the next day, but avoid vigorously rubbing the genital area. Bathing, sexual intercourse, cycling, and exercise are permitted 2 weeks after surgery if sutures were not removed, or 1 month after surgery if sutures were removed. Refrain from activities that increase blood flow, such as drinking alcohol or taking long showers, for 1 week after surgery. Avoid smoking for 1 month after surgery.

Is a follow-up visit necessary after surgery?

If suture removal is required, please visit our clinic one week after surgery for suture removal. Regardless of whether suture removal is needed, we request that you visit our clinic for follow-up examinations one month, three months, and six months after surgery.

Is it possible for the labia minora to become enlarged or lose their shape again after surgery?

There is generally no need to remove the labia minora. If you have any concerning symptoms, please consult us.
