CHARACTERISTICS

Lower Eyelid Ptosis Correction

Lower eyelid lift surgery involves making an incision along the line near the base of the lower lashes to remove excess skin causing sagging and address the orbicularis oculi muscle. This procedure targets lower eyelid drooping and wrinkles, creating a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance around the eyes.

When under-eye puffiness is significant, it is necessary to simultaneously remove the underlying orbital fat causing the issue. For individuals with noticeable under-eye hollows, we may also recommend the Hamra technique for dark circle correction, which involves relocating orbital fat to fill in the hollows at the same time.

The main causes of drooping lower eyelids

One of the main causes of lower eyelid drooping is aging. As we age, the bone supporting the lower eyelid shrinks, causing the cheeks to hollow out, and the ligaments connecting the skin to the bone loosen, leading to lower eyelid drooping. Other causes besides aging include UV damage, obesity, and smoking.

Under-eye sagging, puffiness, and dark circles can make you look tired and often older than your actual age. Lower eyelid lift surgery can remove excess skin and fat.

The Difference Between "Lower Eyelid Lift" and "Under-Eye Dark Circles and Sagging Removal"

Bianca Clinic offers two seemingly similar procedures: "Lower Eyelid Lift" and "Under-Eye Dark Circle & Sagging Removal." The difference between the two lies in the incision location and the tissue removed. Lower Eyelid Ptosis Correction involves making an incision near the lower lash line to remove excess skin and, in some cases, orbital fat. In contrast, Under-Eye Dark Circles and Sagging Correction involves making a 5-7mm incision on the inner side of the lower eyelid (conjunctiva) to remove orbital fat beneath the eyes. Therefore, Under-Eye Dark Circles and Sagging Correction leaves no visible external scar.

For those with significant excess skin under the eyes, lower eyelid lift surgery is recommended. For those who can achieve a refreshed eye area solely through orbital fat removal, under-eye dark circles and sagging removal is suitable. Please consult with a physician to determine which procedure is appropriate for you.

RECOMMENDED POINTS

Age when lower eyelid sagging becomes common and when to seek medical attention

The age at which people typically begin to notice lower eyelid sagging is generally considered to be in their late twenties and beyond. However, individuals with more facial fat or a skeletal structure with less cheek fullness may notice lower eyelid sagging at a younger age.
The skin around the eyelids is extremely thin and prone to stretching, making it difficult to effectively treat sagging with massage or eye cream once it occurs. If you notice sagging in your lower eyelids, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible and undergo appropriate treatment.

Postoperative Course and Precautions for Lower Eyelid Ptosis Correction Surgery

The postoperative course and precautions for lower eyelid ptosis correction are as follows.

<Postoperative Course>
■Immediately after surgery to approximately 3 days
The period when swelling and bruising peak. Take measures such as cooling the eye area and sleeping with your head elevated.

■Postoperative Day 4 to 1 Week
This is the period when swelling and bruising gradually subside. Please avoid applying makeup to the incision area.

■2 weeks after surgery
The period when swelling and bruising have largely subsided. The eye area gradually returns to its pre-surgery state.

■1 month after surgery
The period when scars become less noticeable. Over time, the redness of the skin also fades further.

<Postoperative Precautions>
■Take thorough measures against swelling and bruising
To prevent swelling and bruising from worsening, please rest as much as possible. Immediately after surgery through the first 3 days, thoroughly cool the eye area and sleep on your back with a high pillow. Also, please refrain from strenuous exercise, long baths, and alcohol consumption.

■We also take infection control measures seriously.
Until the sutures are removed one week after surgery, take care to prevent infection at the surgical site. Apply makeup avoiding the scar and be careful not to touch the eye area.

■If it hurts, use pain relievers.
If you experience pain at the surgical site after lower eyelid lift surgery, take the prescribed pain medication as directed. If you continue to experience severe pain despite taking the medication, or if you notice significant swelling at the surgical site, please contact us immediately.

3 Signs of Aging Around the Eyes

If you've been thinking, "My eyes seem to be looking older lately..." it might be a sign of aging around the eyes. For the following three signs, an ophthalmic plastic surgery approach (such as surgery or natural-looking injectable treatments) may be effective. We invite you to consult with Bianca Clinic, where specialists in eye treatments are available.

<Sign of Aging ① Sagging Eyelids>
When the upper eyelid sags, the double eyelid crease narrows, making it harder to apply eyeliner. Additionally, when the lower eyelid sags, it can make you look older than your actual age or appear tired.

<Sign of Aging ② Poor Eye Opening>
Difficulty opening the eyelids may occur, and the person may appear sleepy even while awake.

<Sign of Aging #3: Dark Circles and Hollows Under the Eyes>
Dark circles under the eyes can make you look tired.

Treatment Process

CONTENT OF TREATMENT

Physician's examination and counseling

We will examine the condition of your lower eyelid sagging and carefully listen to your concerns and preferences. Depending on your symptoms, we may also suggest other treatments.

Design

We finalize the design adjustments before the procedure and have the patient confirm them. We draw the lines using a medical marker.

treatment

After confirming the anesthesia has taken effect, an incision is made slightly below the lower lash line. Sagging skin and, if necessary, orbital fat are removed. The incision is carefully sutured with medical-grade thread.

Aftercare

No hospitalization is required after the procedure. On the day of treatment, you will be discharged with tape applied under your eyes to help stop bleeding. If both the external and internal Hamra procedures are performed simultaneously, gauze and brown tape will be applied for 3 days. You will remove these yourself after 3 days. You will return to the clinic for suture removal after one week. If you have any concerns, please contact Bianca Clinic anytime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lower Eyelid Lift Surgery

Q&A

Does lower eyelid lift surgery involve swelling and bruising?

Individual results may vary, but significant swelling typically subsides within 1 to 2 weeks, and bruising tends to fade within about 2 weeks.

How long is the downtime for lower eyelid lift surgery?

The lower eyelid shape will approach its final form in about 4 weeks. Additionally, the skin color around the surgical area will change from purple to yellow and return to its original color in about 2 weeks.

When can I start wearing makeup after lower eyelid lift surgery?

Sutures under the eyes are removed one week after surgery. Makeup on areas other than under the eyes is possible starting the day after surgery. Please consult your doctor for details.

After lower eyelid lift surgery, is it possible to shower or wash my face?

If the wound is not exposed to water, it is possible starting on the day of surgery. Please consult your doctor for details.

What type of anesthesia is used for lower eyelid lift surgery?

After administering topical anesthesia, local anesthesia is performed using an ultra-fine needle. Since local anesthesia is administered after the topical anesthesia takes effect, the pain from the injection is expected to be reduced.

Is the effect of lower eyelid lift semi-permanent?

No, the effects are not permanent, and even after surgery, lower eyelid drooping may recur due to aging. While individual results vary, surgery combined with proper care is believed to help prevent lower eyelid drooping.

What should I be careful about after lower eyelid lift surgery?

Please rest for 2 to 3 days after surgery. Refrain from strenuous exercise, long baths, and alcohol consumption until your doctor gives permission.

At what age can lower eyelid lift surgery be performed?

At Bianca Clinic, we tend to see many patients in their late twenties and older who undergo lower eyelid lift surgery. However, lower eyelid lift may not be suitable for individuals with minimal skin laxity. In such cases, we will propose other appropriate treatments, so please consult with us first.
