A new approach to FAGA (female pattern baldness)! What kind of treatment can you get at a cosmetic medicine clinic? Bianca's cosmetic medicine doctor Yoko Maeda explains!

FAGA (female pattern hair loss) is a general term for thinning hair in women. It is said that one in ten women suffer from FAGA these days, and the number of women suffering from thinning hair is on the rise. However, there are many cases where hair loss in women is difficult to cure, and it is often said that "hair loss treatments for women are ineffective."
To treat female hair loss (FAGA), many beauty clinics and dermatologists prescribe topical medications containing minoxidil, an ingredient that promotes hair growth and inhibits the progression of hair loss, as well as oral medications containing zinc and B vitamins, which help make hair stronger and more elastic.
This time, we will introduce a new approach that differs from these conventional treatments. We will explain in an easy-to-understand manner two treatments offered at Bianca Clinic: [Hormone Replacement Therapy] and [Exosome Therapy].
What is alopecia that is common in women?
Thinning hair is often thought to be more prevalent in men, but many women also suffer from it. It becomes more noticeable after menopause, and many women are concerned about it along with the various menopausal symptoms.
There are four main types of hair loss in women:
◆ Diffuse alopecia (FAGA)
Alopecia areata
Postpartum alopecia (hair loss common in women after childbirth)
Traction alopecia (hair loss caused by hairstyles that pull the hair too hard)
Of these, the type of hair loss most commonly seen in women is diffuse alopecia (FAGA). Unlike temporary hair loss, this condition is characterized by a gradual thinning of hair across the entire head, with the part and scalp becoming more noticeable. Some people try to treat diffuse alopecia on their own by using incorrect care such as shampoos for thinning hair or over-the-counter medications, but this can actually make treatment more difficult, so care should be taken.
The main cause of diffuse alopecia (FAGA) is a decrease in female hormones. Therefore, it is said to be common in women around the time of menopause, but recently there have been cases of young women in their 20s and 30s developing the condition. Poor lifestyle habits, stress, and unreasonable dieting are also thought to be causes of diffuse alopecia.

[FAGA Treatment ①] Hormone replacement therapy
The primary cause of hair loss in women, especially those around the menopause, is hormonal influence. Therefore, hormone replacement therapy, which aims to normalize hormone balance and supplement the hormone deficiency, is one of the effective treatments for FAGA.

Hormonal imbalance is not necessarily a "disease". However, if you ignore it, you cannot call yourself "healthy" and will suffer from some kind of ailment. When it comes to hair loss treatment, ignoring your hormone status is like treating the symptoms without treating the root cause. It can cause the treatment to be less effective, so it is important to deal with it appropriately.
Hormone replacement therapy used to treat FAGA mainly involves supplementing the following hormones:
Estrogen/Progesterone
Did you know that estrogen, a representative female hormone, is deeply involved in FAGA? It is known that a decrease in estrogen affects the hair growth cycle and promotes hair loss.
In addition to estrogen, there are other female hormones such as progesterone, which supports estrogen. Normalizing the secretion of these hormones can promote healthy hair growth and slow the progression of hair loss.
Thyroid Hormones (T3/T4)
There are two types of thyroid hormones, T3 and T4, secreted by the thyroid gland, which have functions such as protein synthesis and sugar metabolism. A decrease in thyroid hormone is also one of the causes of hair loss in women. Therefore, when undergoing hormone replacement therapy, thyroid hormone levels are checked to see if they are normal.
Thyroid hormone levels vary with age, so even if tests show that your thyroid hormone levels are normal, you may actually be deficient. Hormone replacement therapy normalizes thyroid function and improves your overall metabolism, which has a positive effect on healthy hair growth.
[FAGA Treatment ②] Exosome Therapy
Recently, treatments that supplement "exosomes," which are necessary for hair growth, have been attracting attention. Exosomes are small, sac-like substances (vesicles) secreted by cells. They contain various information transmitters and play a role in facilitating communication between cells.
Exosomes contain growth factors and proteins that stimulate hair growth, and are therefore attracting attention as a new treatment for alopecia. In exosome therapy, exosomes are injected directly into the scalp, where they act on the hair roots and promote healthy hair growth. Many people have experienced the effects of one treatment, saying, "My hair has become stronger!" Of course, if there is another underlying cause for thinning hair, exosome therapy alone will not be able to provide a permanent cure. In that case, it is important to also perform another underlying treatment.
