CHARACTERISTICS

Ingrown eyelashes

Ingrown eyelashes refer to a condition where eyelashes grow inward toward the eyeball. In cases of moderate to severe ingrown eyelashes, symptoms such as pain, a foreign body sensation, or corneal scratches can occur due to the eyelashes rubbing against the eyeball. When the condition is mild, treatment may involve simply plucking the inward-growing lashes. However, if symptoms are severe, surgery may need to be considered. Additionally, downward-growing lower eyelashes can make the eyes appear smaller cosmetically. Treatment for ingrown eyelashes involves removing excess skin from the lower eyelid and suturing the eyelashes to the lower tarsal plate* to correct their growth direction.

*Tarsal plate…A plate of cartilage-like hardness located along the edge of the eyelid

Types of Ingrown Eyelashes

Ectropion
A condition where the skin and muscles supporting the tarsal plate loosen with age, causing the eyelid margin and eyelashes to turn inward toward the eyeball. This type is common in the elderly.

Ectropion
The eyelid orientation and eyelash growth pattern are normal, but excess skin and subcutaneous fat cause the eyelid to bulge, pushing the eyelashes inward toward the eyeball. This type is common in infants and young children.

Ectropion
The eyelid orientation is normal, but the eyelashes grow inward, pointing toward the eyeball. This type may also be accompanied by entropion or trichiasis.

Treatment for Ingrown Eyelashes

There are two types of treatments for inverted eyelashes: the incision method and the suture method. At Bianca Clinic, we primarily perform the incision method.

<Incision Method>
A surgical method involving making an incision in part of the eyelid to remove fat tissue and skin, then suturing with medical thread. This procedure is performed in cases where eyelashes excessively irritate the eye or when there is significant eyelid fat and skin laxity. It promotes adhesion between the skin near the eyelashes and the tarsal plate, offering the potential for long-lasting results.

<Buried Method>
This method uses medical sutures to turn the tip of the eyelid outward, similar to the double-stitch method, where the sutures are buried within the skin. It is often performed for mild cases of ingrown eyelashes. If the sutures loosen, the eyelashes may become ingrown again.

RECOMMENDED POINTS

When to Consider Surgery for Ingrown Eyelashes

Generally, if you experience symptoms from ingrown eyelashes—such as a gritty feeling in the eye, pain, redness, or sensitivity to light—it may be time to consider surgery. Additionally, having eyelashes that curl outward at the base is considered one of the conditions for beautiful-looking eyes. Therefore, if you want to feel more confident about your eye area or enhance the appearance of your eye makeup, please consider treatment for ingrown eyelashes.

Are inverted eyelashes something you're born with?

Ingrown eyelashes can be congenital, caused by the natural shape of the eyelid, or they can develop due to aging or inflammation around the eyes. Ingrown eyelashes caused by aging are primarily due to the loosening of the tissues supporting the tarsal plate and the muscles that close the eyelid. Even individuals who did not originally have ingrown eyelashes may develop them later in life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ingrown Eyelashes

Q&A

How long is the downtime after ingrown eyelash surgery?

Individual results may vary, but recovery typically takes about 2 to 3 weeks. For incisional procedures, bruising around the eyes may be visible for about a week after surgery, and the skin may appear slightly yellowish around the cheeks for about 10 days to 2 weeks post-surgery. Please consult your doctor for details.

Does corrective tape for inverted eyelashes work?

For acquired eyelash inversion, some clinics monitor the condition using corrective tape or eyelash removal. However, surgery is considered for fundamental treatment.

Can ingrown eyelash surgery and double eyelid surgery be done at the same time?

The feasibility of combining procedures, including double eyelid surgery, is determined by the physician's judgment. Please consult your physician for details.

Are inverted eyelashes covered by insurance at cosmetic clinics?

Depending on the condition of your ingrown eyelashes, Bianca Clinic also provides insurance-covered treatment for this condition. Whether insurance applies is determined by our physician following an examination, so please feel free to consult with us at our clinic.

Should even a single ingrown eyelash be treated?

If the eyelashes are not touching the eyeball, observation or self-care may be sufficient. Regardless of the number of inverted eyelashes, consider seeking medical attention if you experience symptoms such as eye redness or pain, or if the appearance bothers you.

Can inverted eyelashes be fixed with eyelash curlers or extensions?

Eyelash curlers should be used several times a day, while eyelash extensions require treatment every one to two months. If you wish to address the root cause of inverted eyelashes, you may need to consider seeking treatment at a hospital.
