Hello, my name is Nakao from Bianca Clinic.
Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt that your nose looks somewhat crooked?
Nevertheless, a left-right difference in the nose is not abnormal; it is normal. Many people have asymmetrical noses of varying degrees. However, depending on the cause of the crooked nose and the degree of crookedness, not only the appearance but also functional aspects such as breathing may be affected...
In this article, a cosmetic surgeon explains in simple terms the causes of a crooked nose and the cosmetic medical approach to aligning it.
Why is my nose crooked? Find out the causes and effects.
The nose is located in the center of the face and is a very prominent part. For example, when you put on makeup or glasses, you may think, "Hey! Is my nose crooked? You may notice that your nose is crooked. However, a crooked nose is a very natural condition found in about 90% of Japanese people. In fact, I have observed many people's noses, and I have rarely met anyone who does not have a crooked nose. Rest assured that it is more rare to find someone who does not have a crooked nose at all.
There are two main conditions for a crooked nose
[Nasal septal curvature.
The curvature of the nasal septum, the wall-like bone that separates the right and left nostrils. The curvature is caused by the difference in growth speed between the cartilage that makes up the nasal septum and the nasal bones during the growth period, and is seen in almost all adults. In some cases, the curvature is acquired due to trauma such as fractures or bruises.
[Oblique nose]
The nasal line that runs from below the eyebrows to the tip of the nose is curved to either the left or right. When only the nasal bones in the upper part of the nose are bent, it is called "bony plagiocephaly," and when the nasal septal cartilage on the lower side is curved, it is called "cartilaginous plagiocephaly. The cause may be congenital, which is difficult to cure, as well as trauma.
Where can I get treatment?
Nasal septal curvature and strabismus do not particularly require treatment if there are no symptoms that interfere with life. However, if there is some functional trouble or if the appearance of the nose is bothersome, it can be approached surgically.
Treatment of nasal septal curvature
The main symptom of nasal septal curvature is nasal congestion. If this causes the following daily harm, it is advisable to seek treatment instead of leaving the nose crooked.
- mouth breathing
- snoring
- insomnia
- Chronic headache
- olfactory disorder
- Frequent nosebleeds (sensitive mucous membranes)
Basically, treatment of various functional symptoms caused by a crooked nose is covered by insurance at an ENT clinic. While diseases such as sinusitis and otitis media that are concomitant with nasal septal curvature can be treated with medication, the only fundamental treatment for nasal curvature is surgery (nasal septum correction).
Treatment of a slanted nose
In the case of a skewed nose, it may not be obvious with a cartilaginous skewed nose, but with a bony skewed nose, it is clearly evident that the nose is crooked. For this reason, many patients seek improvement due to concerns about their appearance rather than functional concerns.
Treatment of a slanted nose is basically free treatment in plastic or cosmetic surgery. In some cases, for the purpose of improving functional symptoms, it is covered by insurance at otorhinolaryngology departments.
Bianca's approach to a “straight and natural nose
The correction of a slanted nose requires a high level of skill on the part of the physician. Therefore, we recommend that you undergo the procedure with a physician who is well versed in the anatomy, function, and aesthetics of the nose. The following is an explanation of the cosmetic surgical approach that Bianca Clinic offers. At Bianca, we use the methods listed below to correct the oblique nose with attention to both function and aesthetics.
Correction of nasal septum / correction of oblique nose
In the case of a bony oblique nose, the nasal bridge is straightened by shaving or excising the protruding portion of the nasal bone. In the case of a bony nose, the protruding part of the nasal bone is shaved or removed to straighten the nasal bridge. On the other hand, in the case of a cartilaginous oblique nose, the nasal bridge is corrected by hollowing out the nasal septum or transplanting a nasal septal cartilage or rib cartilage.
Bianca basically uses the close method (incision made from inside the nostrils), so no scars are visible on the outside. During the counseling, the 3D simulation system "Vectra" is used to provide a detailed simulation of how the nose will look now and how it will look after the procedure. By sharing the image with the patient and the doctor and deciding on the surgical plan, we aim to achieve a higher level of satisfaction for the patient.
