As an Assistant Professor, Associate Ward Director, and Chief of Dermatopathology at the university hospital dermatology department, I deepened my expertise through academic presentations and paper publications both domestically and internationally. I have handled a wide range of treatments, from birthmark therapy in children to adult pigmentation concerns, utilizing various lasers and injection therapies, while also contributing to community healthcare. Through encountering numerous cases, I strongly felt the potential and necessity of aesthetic medicine, resolving to pursue further expertise. Building upon my solid dermatological knowledge and meticulous diagnostic skills, I value treatments that gently support each individual's skin while bringing out its inherent beauty.

Downtime after an Alma Hybrid™ treatment varies depending on the treatment details, and symptoms such as redness, warmth, roughness, and peeling may last from a few days to about a week.

Many people are probably wondering, “If I get the Alma Hybrid treatment, should I take the next day off work?” or “Is the downtime different between Soft Lift and Scar?”

Since Alma Hybrid™ allows you to adjust the type and ratio of the lasers used, downtime varies even when using the same device.

At BIANCA CLINIC, we offer treatments that use the 1570 nm laser alone or in combination with a CO2 laser, depending on the patient's specific needs.

In this article, I’ll discuss not only the changes that commonly occur after a treatment, but also the differences in downtime depending on the treatment option, as well as what to consider if you have important plans coming up.

How long is the downtime for the Alma Hybrid?

After an Alma Hybrid treatment, you may experience redness, a sensation of heat, roughness, or peeling.

Although noticeable reactions usually subside within a few days to about a week, they may persist for about two weeks depending on skin condition, treatment intensity, and the area treated.

The important thing here is not to think in terms of a single number, such as “How many days for the Alma Hybrid?”

The Alma Hybrid™ features a CO₂ laser that vaporizes the skin's surface and a 1570 nm non-ablative laser that delivers heat without vaporizing the skin's surface.

A key feature of HyGrid™ is its ability to adjust the ratio between the two, allowing you to determine the irradiation settings while balancing treatment objectives with downtime.

In other words, downtime varies not only based on which treatment option is selected, but also based on factors such as the actual output, irradiation density, and the ratio of CO₂ laser to 1570 nm laser.

How these two types of lasers affect the skin is,"What Is Alma Hybrid™? A Clear Explanation of Its Expected Effects, Benefits, and Drawbacks"I discuss this in detail there.

Downtime varies depending on the menu item.

At Bianca Clinic, we use the Alma Hybrid in four different treatment options.

The following is a summary of the recommended exposure methods and when to resume wearing makeup and taking showers.

Menu

Main Irradiation Methods

Makeup & Shower

The Concept of Downtime

Soft Lift

1570 nm Laser Only

Starting that day

Since it does not cause moisture to evaporate from the skin's surface, it is easier to minimize the impact on daily life.

Hybrid Lift

CO2 + 1570 nm

Starting the next day

Because it contains CO2, it may cause redness, roughness, or peeling.

Scar

CO2 + 1570 nm

Starting the next day

Since the treatment is tailored to the specific condition, such as acne scars, the degree of reaction varies depending on the settings.

Facelift + FaceTite

Administering Alma Hybrid™ during surgery

Follow the postoperative instructions provided after surgery.

Consider downtime not only for the laser treatment but also for any accompanying surgical procedures

You can't make a rigid distinction like, "Since it's a Scar, it must be longer than a Hybrid Lift."

Both use CO2 lasers and 1570 nm lasers, but the required power and irradiation ratio vary depending on the condition of the skin.

On the other hand, Soft Lift uses only a 1570 nm laser, and at Bianca Clinic, patients are allowed to wear makeup and shower on the same day as their treatment. If you’re trying to balance the treatment with work or other commitments, this difference may be a factor to consider.

However, you shouldn't choose a treatment based solely on how short the downtime is. It's also important to consider how well the treatment addresses your skin concerns and aligns with the results you're hoping to achieve.

For information on the features of each menu and how to choose one,"Who Is the Alma Hybrid Best For? An Explanation of Its Applications and Four Treatment Options"We provide more details here.

"The day you can return to your normal daily life" and "the day the redness completely disappears" are not necessarily the same.

When considering downtime, I want you to be aware that the time when you can resume your daily routine isn’t necessarily the same as the time when the redness in your skin completely subsides.

For example, even after you’ve learned how to apply makeup, you may still have some slight redness or roughness.

The downtime for Alma Hybrid is generally a few days to about a week, but depending on your skin condition and the treatment settings, it may take longer.

Therefore, it’s important to consider not only whether you’ll be able to go to work the next day, but also whether you’ll have enough time before any upcoming events—such as photo shoots or other occasions where your skin’s appearance matters—to prepare.

What symptoms occur with Alma Hybrid?

The reactions observed after treatment vary depending on the treatment details.

Common symptoms include redness, a sensation of heat, roughness, and peeling. Other possible symptoms include pain, swelling, scabs, and acne.

In particular, when combined with a CO₂ laser, the treatment creates microscopic vaporized areas on the skin’s surface, which increases the likelihood of superficial changes—such as roughness or peeling—compared to using the 1570 nm laser alone.

In contrast, the 1570 nm laser is a non-ablative laser that does not vaporize the skin's surface but delivers heat to the dermis.

That difference is one of the reasons why the post-treatment care instructions for Soft Lift differ from those for other treatments.

What can I expect after an Alma Hybrid treatment?

Immediately after an Alma Hybrid treatment, you may experience redness and a sensation of heat, and you may notice roughness or peeling starting the next day or later.

Immediately After Treatment | Redness or a sensation of heat may occur

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience redness or a sensation of heat.

At Bianca Clinic, we gently cool the treated area after the procedure, check the condition of your skin, and then explain your at-home skincare routine.

The Next Day and Beyond | You may notice roughness or peeling

When undergoing treatment that combines CO2 laser therapy, in addition to redness, you may experience concerns such as roughness on the skin's surface, peeling, or scabbing.

Avoid trying to peel the skin off forcefully or using a scrub or similar product to remove rough patches.

After a treatment, your skin is more sensitive than usual.

Since there may be cases where “there’s almost no pain, but the skin’s surface feels slightly rough up close,” if you have an important photo shoot or event coming up, it’s safer not to base your plans solely on the date you’re expected to return to work.

A few days to about a week | The marks will gradually become less noticeable

Although redness, a sensation of heat, roughness, and peeling usually subside within a few days to about a week, the speed of recovery varies from person to person.

Depending on the treatment area, settings, and skin condition, mild redness or other symptoms may last longer than that.

If you have specific dates coming up—such as a wedding, a trip, or a photo shoot—when you’d like your skin to be as calm as possible, please let us know about those plans during your consultation.

The number of days of downtime that can be tolerated is also important information to consider when planning the irradiation regimen.

Also, when considering treatments for acne scars or enlarged pores, some people are unsure whether to choose Potenza.

Since Alma Hybrid and Potenza take different approaches to skin treatment, it’s important to choose based not only on downtime but also on your skin condition and the results you’re aiming for.

For more information on the features of each and how to choose between them,"What's the Difference Between Alma Hybrid and Potenza? How to Choose a Treatment for Pores, Acne Scars, and Pitted Scars"This is explained there.

Side Effects, Risks, and Guidelines for Seeking Medical Attention

With Alma Hybrid, you may experience redness, a sensation of heat, pain, roughness, peeling, swelling, scabbing, or acne.

You should also be aware of the risks of hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, burns, infections, and scarring.

Although post-treatment reactions vary from person to person, if redness, pain, or swelling worsens rather than subsiding over time, or if you notice any changes that may indicate a burn or infection, please contact the clinic immediately rather than waiting to see how it develops.

Just because you have peeling skin or scabs doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong.

The important thing is to confirm whether the expected course of the disease aligns with the treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alma Hybrid Downtime

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions from patients regarding downtime after the Alma Hybrid treatment, including when to return to work, precautions regarding makeup, and differences depending on the treatment option. Please use this as a reference when planning your schedule after the procedure.

Q1. Can I go to work the day after receiving the Alma Hybrid treatment?

For desk jobs and the like, some people can return to work the very next day, but the extent to which redness and roughness are noticeable depends on the specifics of the treatment.

Especially if you have a job that requires appearing in public or photo shoots, we recommend that you consider not only whether you’ll be able to work but also “what level of skin condition you’d be comfortable with” when deciding on a treatment date.

Q2. Is the Soft Lift the treatment with the shortest downtime?

Soft Lift uses only a 1570 nm laser, and at Bianca Clinic, patients are allowed to wear makeup and shower on the same day as their treatment.

Since other standalone Alma Hybrid™ plans start the next day, this plan is a good option to consider if you want to minimize disruption to your daily life.

However, the best treatment option varies depending on your skin condition and goals. You shouldn’t choose a treatment based solely on how short the downtime is.

Q3. Will the redness definitely go away after a week?

Although they often become less noticeable within a few days to a week, they do not necessarily disappear within a week.

Depending on the treatment conditions and the treatment area, mild redness may persist for a longer period. If you have an important event coming up, please consult with us to schedule your appointment well in advance.

Q4. After an Alma Hybrid treatment, when can I resume my regular skincare routine?

After your treatment, be sure to focus on gentle skincare that emphasizes moisturizing.

It is important to avoid using products that can be irritating—such as exfoliants, scrubs, and retinol—until your skin has calmed down.

The timing for resuming your regular skincare routine varies depending on the treatment details and your skin's recovery status, so please follow your doctor's instructions.

Q5. Is it okay to use makeup to cover up redness?

At Bianca Clinic, we allow patients to apply makeup on the same day as a Soft Lift treatment and on the day after any other standalone Alma Hybrid™ treatment.

However, avoid irritating the skin by rubbing it too hard or applying multiple layers of cream in an attempt to hide peeling skin.

When it comes to Alma Hybrid, don't just think about "how many days to take off"; consider the treatment details as well.

Downtime for Alma Hybrid™ isn't determined by the equipment name alone.

Soft Lift, which uses a 1570 nm laser alone, and Hybrid Lift and Scar, which combine it with a CO2 laser, differ in how they treat the skin's surface.

Furthermore, even with the same treatment menu, the post-treatment reaction varies depending on the output, irradiation density, and the ratio of the two lasers.

When incorporating cosmetic procedures into your lifestyle, it’s very important to strike a balance with work, travel, and important events.

At BIANCA CLINIC, we determine the treatment plan not only based on the condition of your skin, but also by asking you questions such as “How many days of downtime can you take?” and “By when do you want your skin to settle down?”

If you have any questions about the timing of your Alma Hybrid™ treatment or the downtime involved, please feel free to ask during your consultation.
