What Is the Vaginal Care® Injection? A Doctor Explains Its Effects and Features for Vaginal Dryness and Pain During Intercourse

宮本 亜希子

Board-certified cosmetic gynecologist/ Board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, Japan Medical Specialty Organization Akiko Miyamoto

After engaging in general obstetrics and gynecology practice, including infertility treatment, perinatal care, and other insured treatments, I decided to shift my career to free practice and gynecological aesthetics, with the hope of “supporting women to enjoy their life as a woman” after my own experience fighting against illness. Today, while still being involved in insured medical care as an obstetrician/gynecologist, I am facing women's health issues based on medical evidence through "real femtec" such as gynecologic plastic surgery, Vaginal Growth® injections, and vaginal hyaluronic acid injections, based on my deep anatomical knowledge and skills. We are a leading provider of gynecological services in Japan.
She is also committed to social activities related to the dissemination of sex education, HPV vaccine awareness, and the improvement of women's quality of life. He is also actively involved in educating the public about medical knowledge, such as writing Chapter 7, "Vaginal Hyaluronic Acid Injection," in his specialty book, "The Basics of Cosmetic Surgery," which is the first book he reads when he becomes a cosmetic surgeon.

The Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection is a procedure in which a skin booster formulation containing hyaluronic acid and amino acids is injected into the vaginal mucosa to restore moisture and elasticity.

"I've been noticing vaginal dryness lately," "I feel pain during intercourse," "It just doesn't feel the same as it used to."

When it comes to concerns about the intimate area, it’s easy to put up with them, thinking, “Is this really something I should talk to someone about?” or “It’s just part of getting older, so there’s nothing I can do about it.”

However, vaginal dryness, pain, and discomfort can be caused by a variety of factors—not just changes in female hormones—including inflammation, gynecological conditions, and tension in the pelvic floor muscles.

The Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection at BIANCA CLINIC is a femcare treatment developed by Dr. Akiko Miyamoto, a board-certified specialist in obstetrics and gynecology recognized by the Japan Board of Medical Specialties and a consultant in cosmetic gynecology.

In this article, I’ll explain what the Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection treatment entails, the effects you can expect, its pros and cons, and why I believe it’s important to “understand the condition of the vagina before undergoing the procedure.”

What kind of procedure is the Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection?

The Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection is a procedure that involves injecting a skin booster formulation into the vaginal mucosa with the goal of restoring moisture and elasticity.

This concept was born from the idea that, just as facial skin-nourishing injections help improve the skin’s overall condition, the vaginal mucosa can also benefit from receiving the necessary nutrients.

Select a formulation based on symptoms and the condition of the vagina

With the Vaginal Care® injection, we first assess conditions such as dryness and atrophy of the vaginal mucosa before determining which formulation to use.

At Bianca Clinic, we offer Sunecos—a formulation combining non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid and six types of amino acids—as well as GOURI and Sunecos + Exosomes.

For example, Sunecos is a formulation designed to deliver hyaluronic acid and amino acids to the vaginal mucosa, with the goal of restoring moisture and elasticity.

Rather than deciding which product to use right away, we first assess your current condition based on your vaginal health index and symptoms, and then determine the approach that’s best for you.

This treatment isn't just for menopause.

Dryness and atrophy of the vaginal mucosa are also seen in GSM (menopause-related genitourinary syndrome), which is caused by a decline in female hormones around the time of menopause.

However, it’s not just women who have gone through menopause who experience vaginal discomfort.

Due to factors such as taking medications that affect hormones or changes in physical condition, even young women may experience vaginal dryness or discomfort during intercourse.

Rather than assuming that a particular treatment is necessary based solely on age, it is important to first determine why those symptoms are occurring now.

What results can I expect from the Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection?

The Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection involves injecting a skin booster formulation into the vaginal mucosa—where dryness and atrophy are present—to restore moisture and elasticity, thereby aiming to alleviate discomfort.

Moisture: Vaginal dryness, burning sensation, etc.

Elasticity: Decreased firmness and flexibility of the vaginal mucosa, etc.

Comfort During Intercourse: Pain caused by dryness, discomfort from friction, etc.

Addressing Discomfort Caused by Dryness and Atrophy

When the vaginal lining becomes dry, you may experience a stinging sensation during daily activities, or friction during sexual intercourse may cause pain.

Overseas, research has also been conducted using an injectable formulation that combines low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid with six types of amino acids.

In a foreign study reported in 2026, 84 women aged 46 to 60 with symptoms of vaginal and vulvar atrophy received three injections—administered every three weeks—of a formulation containing hyaluronic acid and six types of amino acids.

As a result, patients reported that vaginal dryness, itching, a burning sensation, and pain during intercourse had improved compared to before treatment at the 3-month and 6-month follow-ups.[1]

The product used was “Sunekos Inticare.” Although it is not the same formulation as Sunekos 200, which we carry at our clinic, I believe it is helpful to note that clinical research on the “Vaginal Growth®” approach is gradually progressing.

Pain during intercourse isn't necessarily caused by "dryness."

If you experience pain during intercourse, you might think, “Wouldn’t adding some lubrication help?”

But there isn't just one cause of pain during intercourse, is there?

In addition to vaginal dryness and inflammation, this may also be caused by unconscious tension in the pelvic floor muscles or underlying gynecological conditions.

That is precisely why it is important to first identify the cause rather than immediately administering a Vaginal Care® injection just because you are experiencing pain.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection?

While the Vaginal Care® injection can directly target the vaginal mucosa, it is not suitable for all vaginal conditions.

Benefits | Helps maintain the health of the vaginal mucosa itself

If dryness or atrophy is a contributing factor to discomfort, a skin booster solution can be injected directly into the vaginal mucosa to help restore moisture and elasticity.

Another feature is that, since the procedure is performed via injection, it places minimal strain on the body.

Disadvantages | Depending on the cause, a different approach may be necessary

If the cause of pain or discomfort during intercourse is due to pelvic floor muscle tension or gynecological conditions, the Vaginal Care® injection alone may not be sufficient to resolve the issue.

Swelling, pain, bruising, and other side effects may occur after the procedure.

At Bianca Clinic, we assess your vaginal health index before considering treatment.

There’s something I particularly value about the Vaginal Care® injection.

The first step is to understand the current condition of your vagina.

Simply feeling that "it feels dry" or experiencing "pain during intercourse" isn't enough to determine the actual condition of the mucous membranes or the cause of the symptoms.

At Bianca Clinic, in addition to a physical examination, we assess factors such as the vaginal health index to determine whether the Vaginal Care® injection is appropriate or if a different approach is needed.

Understanding the Condition of the Vaginal Mucosa Through the Vaginal Health Index

At Bianca Clinic, we offer a vaginal health assessment that includes vaginal pressure measurement, a vaginal moisture test, and a vaginal pH check.

By evaluating not only the patient’s reported symptoms but also the results of these tests and clinical findings, we can gain a more specific understanding of the condition of the vaginal mucosa and the underlying causes of the symptoms, and determine whether the Vaginal Growth® injection is appropriate or if a different approach is needed.

In addition, vaginal dryness and pain may be caused not only by changes in the mucous membranes but also by gynecological conditions or tension in the pelvic floor muscles.

Therefore, rather than automatically opting for the Vaginal Rejuvenation® injection, it’s important to first understand the current condition of your vagina and choose a method tailored to the underlying cause. This is a key principle we prioritize at Bianca Clinic’s Aesthetic Gynecology department.

Before deciding “which treatment to perform,” ask yourself, “Why am I experiencing these symptoms right now?”

Let's start sorting things out together from there.

Q. What type of medication is used in the Vaginal Development® injection?

At Bianca Clinic, we determine which treatment to use based on the condition of your vagina and your specific concerns.

We currently offer Sunecos, GOURI, and Sunecos + Exosomes.

Q. Are Vaginal Development® injections and vaginal hyaluronic acid injections the same thing?

They are not the same. The purpose of the Vaginal Care® injection is to restore moisture and elasticity to the vaginal mucosa.

Vaginal hyaluronic acid injections are performed for other purposes, such as adding volume to the vaginal walls.

Q. How often do you take it?

At Bianca Clinic, we generally recommend one course consisting of three sessions, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart.

The appropriate number of sessions and intervals vary depending on the condition.

Q. If I experience pain during intercourse, should I get a Vaginal Care® injection?

That's not necessarily the case.

Since there are multiple causes of pain during intercourse, we first assess the condition of the vagina and consider this as an option if dryness or atrophy is a factor.

Q. At what age should I start taking care of my vagina?

You don't have to base it on age.

If you're concerned about dryness, pain, itching, or discomfort, start by assessing the current condition of your vagina.

The Vaginal Care® Injection starts with getting to know your own vagina
