My journey into aesthetic medicine stems from a desire to help enrich and beautify lives beyond simply treating illness. My specialties include hyaluronic acid, Botox, and thread lifts. I provide treatments that enhance each individual's unique qualities and bring out an elegant, natural beauty. For concerns around the eyes that are difficult to improve with dermatology alone, I also perform surgical procedures. By integrating dermatology and surgery, I holistically balance the entire face. With three periods of overseas study, I am also able to provide consultations in English.

"I'm interested in Botox injections, but the thought that the effects will last for several months makes me a little nervous."

We sometimes hear comments like this from people who are considering Botox injections for the first time.

Amid this trend, a Type E botulinum toxin product called “Boey®” has emerged overseas. Unlike Type A, which has been widely used in aesthetic medicine, it is characterized by a relatively rapid onset of action and a shorter duration of effect.

In this article, we’ll explain what Boey® is, as well as its characteristics and duration of action.

What is Boey®?

Boey® is an injectable medication containing botulinum toxin type E as its active ingredient. Its generic name is “trenibotulinumtoxinE.”

It was approved in Canada in June 2026 and subsequently approved in the EU in July 2026 for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows.

Many of the botulinum toxin products commonly used in aesthetic medicine in Japan are of the Type A strain. In contrast, a key feature of Boey® is that it uses a different serotype, “Type E.”

Boey® is characterized by "rapid onset and short duration."

What stands out about Boey® is how quickly it takes effect and how long the effects last.

In a Phase III clinical trial targeting expression lines between the eyebrows, changes were observed as early as 8 hours after administration, peaking on Day 7. It was subsequently reported that by Day 21, the severity of the wrinkles had returned to moderate or severe levels*.

In addition, according to Allergan Aesthetics (AbbVie), the effects are said to appear in as little as 8 hours and typically fade after about 2 to 3 weeks*.

For those who wish to maintain the effects for a long time, a short duration of action is not necessarily an advantage. Therefore, rather than making a judgment based solely on the duration of action, it is important to understand the unique way Boey® takes effect and its duration as one of its characteristics.

What is the difference between Type A botulinum toxin and other types?

The main difference between Boey® and conventional botulinum toxin products is that it uses type E botulinum toxin rather than type A.

Although both affect the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles and temporarily inhibit muscle contraction, there are differences in the time it takes for their effects to appear and the duration of those effects.

Therefore, rather than simply assuming that “shorter is better” or “longer is better,” it is important to understand the characteristics of each formulation, such as the time it takes for the effect to appear and the duration of the effect.

At Bianca Clinic, when considering botulinum toxin injections, we develop a treatment plan by evaluating not only the characteristics of the product but also your facial expressions, muscle movements, and desired results.

Boey® is approved in Canada and the EU, but it is not an approved drug in Japan. Additionally, according to overseas approval information, side effects such as ptosis of the eyelid and drooping of the eyebrows have been reported. It is important to verify not only the drug’s characteristics but also its side effects, risks, and approval status.

Even for those considering botulinum toxin injections for the first time, the fact that Boey®’s effects wear off relatively quickly is certainly one piece of information worth knowing about the product.
