What Is the Downtime for InMode FORMA? An Explanation of Redness, Post-Treatment Recovery, and How to Care for Your Skin
As a board-certified dermatologist and aesthetic dermatology instructor recognized by the Japanese Dermatological Association, I oversee both general dermatology and aesthetic dermatology, while also advocating for the importance of “daily skincare” to maximize the effectiveness of aesthetic medical treatments. Holding qualifications such as Advanced Cosmetic Ingredient Specialist and Hair Diagnosis Specialist, I developed the Japanese-made doctor's cosmetics brand "Skin Amure" based on knowledge and experience gained from extensive clinical cases. My expertise has been recognized, leading to appointments as an "InMode Certified Practitioner" and "ADVATx® Global KOL".

"I'd like to take the FORMA course, but will it affect my work the next day?"
"If my face turns red after the treatment, how long will it last?"
During consultations, patients often ask me about this kind of downtime.
InMode FORMA is a treatment that uses RF (radiofrequency) to heat the skin without incisions or injections.
While it’s relatively easy to minimize the impact on daily life, redness or a burning sensation may occur immediately after the treatment, and depending on your skin condition, you may experience dryness.
The important thing is not to confuse “minimal downtime” with “nothing happening.”
In this article, we’ll discuss what changes you can expect after an InMode FORMA treatment, how the recovery process unfolds, and how to plan for work and other outings.
If you'd like to learn more about how FORMA works and the benefits you can expect,"What Is InMode FORMA? A Clear Explanation of Its Expected Effects, Benefits, and Drawbacks"Please see the following as well.
How long is the downtime for InMode FORMA?
Although the InMode FORMA treatment generally involves minimal downtime, redness and flushing may occur immediately after the procedure.

However, since the severity and duration of symptoms vary from person to person, it is not possible to make a blanket statement such as “symptoms will definitely subside in X hours or X days.”
In fact, in a study involving 22 participants with sagging skin under the chin who received four Forma treatments at two-week intervals, transient redness was observed in nearly all participants immediately after the procedure.
On the other hand, no serious side effects have been reported. [1]
Based on this study, it appears that redness immediately following a FORMA treatment is not an uncommon reaction.
This study does not provide detailed information on the duration of downtime, such as “how many hours it took for the redness to disappear in all participants.”
Based on my experience as a practitioner, I’ve found that redness and flushing tend to subside within a day or two after the treatment.
However, the results may vary depending on your skin type, your skin's condition on a given day, and the treatment area.
If you have an upcoming event—such as a wedding, a photo shoot, or an appearance in public—where you want to avoid any changes in your skin as much as possible, it’s a good idea to schedule your treatment well in advance.
What symptoms occur after the InMode FORMA treatment?
After an InMode FORMA treatment, you may experience redness, flushing, a sensation of heat, or mild swelling.
While these may all be temporary changes, you should consult your doctor if your symptoms are severe or worsen.
redness
Redness is a relatively common side effect immediately after the procedure.
Since FORMA uses RF to warm the skin, your skin may appear redder than usual immediately after the treatment.
In a clinical study using InMode FORMA, transient redness was observed in nearly all 22 participants. [1]
Redness alone does not necessarily indicate a problem, but please consult us if you notice any concerning changes, such as redness that gets worse over time or is accompanied by pain.
Hot Flashes and Sensation of Heat
Since FORMA is a treatment that applies heat to the skin, you may feel warmth or a sensation of flushing for a while after the treatment.
The perception of heat varies from person to person.
Not only during downtime, but also if you feel intense heat during the treatment, please let us know—we can adjust the temperature or the treatment method.
How do you spend your time during the downtime after the InMode FORMA treatment?
Not just with InMode FORMA, but as a general rule, it’s important to avoid putting unnecessary strain on your skin after any cosmetic procedure.
Rather than adding special self-care routines, focus on moisturizing and protecting your skin from UV rays, and avoid irritants such as heat and friction.
Avoid saunas and strenuous exercise on the day of your treatment.
On the day of your treatment, please avoid activities that significantly increase blood flow, such as saunas and strenuous exercise.
If your body temperature rises further while you are already experiencing redness or flushing, your symptoms may become more noticeable.
When applying makeup, washing your face, or taking a shower, check the condition of your skin that day as well.
We also often get asked, “Can I put on makeup right after the treatment?”
You may apply makeup and wash your face starting on the day of your treatment.
If you'd like to apply makeup after your treatment before heading home, please bring your own makeup supplies.
You can take a shower starting that same day, but it’s important to check the condition of your skin and, if you notice any redness or stinging, avoid irritants such as rubbing your skin or exposing it to hot water for long periods of time.
Take Care to Moisturize and Protect Your Skin from UV Rays
You may experience dryness after the treatment, so please be sure to moisturize thoroughly.
When you go out, be sure to use sunscreen and take other precautions against UV rays.
Just because you’ve had a treatment doesn’t mean you need to start using new cosmetics or harsh skincare products right away.
Based on your regular skincare routine, it’s important not to scrub your skin too hard.
Side Effects and Risks of InMode FORMA, and Guidelines for Seeking Medical Attention
Temporary redness, dryness, or a burning sensation are common reactions that may occur after FORMA treatment; however, if you experience unusual symptoms—such as severe pain or blisters—you should consult the clinic.
Just because you’re “recovering,” that doesn’t mean you have to try to diagnose all your skin symptoms on your own.
In particular,
- The pain is severe or persistent
- The redness and swelling are getting worse over time.
- Skin symptoms such as blisters are observed
- My symptoms haven't subsided yet, and I'm feeling anxious.
If this is the case, please consult your clinic.
If you notice any changes that concern you, it’s okay to reach out even if you’re still hesitating, thinking, “Maybe I don’t need to contact them about something this minor.”

At Bianca Clinic, we tailor FORMA treatments to the condition of your face.
At Bianca Clinic, rather than applying FORMA uniformly across the entire face, we adjust the treatment method while carefully assessing the patient’s bone structure, facial contours, and the extent of sagging.
I myself have been experimenting with different ways to use FORMA for about six months.
What I’ve come to realize is that FORMA isn’t just a treatment that involves “simply heating the body evenly.”
Each patient’s skeletal structure, fat distribution, facial contours, and the appearance of sagging vary.
For this reason, we offer “Custom FORMA,” which allows us to adjust “where,” “from which direction,” and “how” heat is applied.
The same applies to downtime; just because it’s FORMA doesn’t mean everyone will follow the same course.
It is important to develop a treatment plan that is manageable, taking into account the patient’s skin condition on that day as well as their schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions About Downtime with InMode FORMA
When it comes to FORMA's downtime, we receive many questions about daily life, such as, "Can I go to work the next day?" and "Can I wear makeup?"
Here, we've summarized some key points you should know before your treatment.
Q1. How many days is the downtime for InMode FORMA?
Redness and flushing may occur for a few days, but the exact duration varies from person to person.
If you have an important event coming up, please do not assume a standard number of days; instead, consult your doctor in advance.
Q2. Can I go to work the day after receiving FORMA treatment?
FORMA does not involve any incisions or injections, so you generally do not need to take time off from work.
However, the degree of redness and other symptoms varies from person to person.
If you have plans—such as customer service or a photo shoot—where you’d like to avoid any noticeable changes in your appearance as much as possible, please consider avoiding treatments right before those events.
Q3. Can I wear makeup after the InMode FORMA treatment?
As a general rule, you may wear makeup on the day of your treatment.
If you experience redness or a stinging sensation, be mindful not only of the cosmetics themselves but also of any friction caused during application or cleansing.
Q4. Is it okay to take a bath, exercise, or go to the sauna after using FORMA?
Please refrain from using the sauna or engaging in strenuous exercise on the day of your treatment.
Regarding bathing, please avoid strong heat exposure based on your skin's condition on the day of your appointment and the clinic's instructions.
If you still have redness or a sensation of heat, it's important not to force your body to get warm.
Q5. What should I do if the redness after FORMA treatment doesn't go away?
If the redness persists, becomes more severe, or is accompanied by pain or blisters, please consult the clinic where you received the treatment.
Redness immediately after the procedure is a possible reaction, but the course of recovery varies from person to person.
If you feel that you “can’t tell if this is normal downtime,” we recommend that you verify the situation rather than making a judgment on your own.
Understand the downtime associated with InMode FORMA and plan a treatment schedule that works for you
With InMode FORMA, temporary redness, dryness, or a sensation of warmth may occur after treatment.

Although the extent and duration of downtime vary from person to person, these procedures tend to have less of an impact on daily life compared to procedures involving incisions or thread lifts.
For this reason, it’s likely to be an option that patients who say, “I can’t really afford a long downtime, but I’d like to tighten my skin and improve its firmness,” will be willing to consider.
However, if you have an important event coming up, be sure to schedule your treatment well in advance, keeping in mind the possibility of redness or other reactions.
I believe that when it comes to cosmetic medicine, it’s not just about the procedure itself—it’s also important that it can be seamlessly incorporated into a person’s daily life, whether that involves work, travel, or special events.
At BIANCA CLINIC, we recommend treatments based not only on the condition of your face and skin, but also by taking into account your preferences and schedule.
If you have any concerns about downtime following a FORMA treatment, please feel free to discuss them during your consultation.
