What Are Smart Drugs? A Consultant in Cosmetic Internal Medicine at BIANCA CLINIC Explains a New Approach to Brain Conditioning
To maximize your beauty, care for both the inside and outside is essential. We aim to bring advanced anti-aging treatments, such as peptide therapy common overseas, to our Japanese patients. While aesthetic medical approaches may offer more gradual results, they are crucial for building the foundation that supports beauty and youth. We combine nutritional therapy and lifestyle improvements with hormone replacement, peptide therapy, and regenerative medicine to propose personalized treatment plans. We provide long-term support for health and beauty from within.

Hello. I am Yoko Maeda, the Director of Aesthetic Medicine at BIANCA CLINIC.
I am a board-certified specialist with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), and I currently provide medical care in the field of aesthetic medicine while incorporating insights from longevity medicine.
In recent years, the concepts of “smart drugs” and “nootropics”—which aim to improve brain function in areas such as concentration, memory, and productivity—have been gaining attention overseas. At the same time, it is also true that concerns have been raised about the dangerous use of these substances based on personal judgment, as well as their use for purposes other than those for which they were intended.
In this article, based on the content I presented during the “BIANCA ACADEMY” webinar, I’ll provide an easy-to-understand explanation covering everything from the basics of “What Are Smart Drugs?” to the concept of brain conditioning with a focus on safety, the relationship between smart drugs and nootropics, and even the perspective on longevity that Bianca Clinic values so highly.
What Are Smart Drugs? The Basics You Should Know First

In recent years, the concept of “smart drugs”—intended to improve concentration, memory, and productivity—has been gaining attention, particularly overseas. Let’s start by clarifying what this term means and its background.
What Are Smart Drugs?

The term "smart drugs" is used as a general term to refer to medications, supplements, and natural ingredients used to enhance brain performance, such as concentration, memory, cognitive ability, and productivity.
In recent years, it has attracted interest from a wide range of people, including students, business professionals, and executives, and the market has been expanding year by year.
While research used to focus primarily on older adults concerned about cognitive decline, the approach has now shifted from “bringing a negative back to zero” to “raising zero to a positive.”
The Relationship to the Concept of Nootropics
Originally, the term “nootropics” was introduced as a concept referring to “substances that safely enhance brain function while protecting brain health.”
However, in recent years, a wide range of substances—including prescription drugs and naturally derived ingredients—are often referred to as “smart drugs,” and the distinction between these and traditional nootropics is no longer as clear-cut as it once was.
It’s not the name that matters. I believe what’s truly important is the approach of drawing out the brain’s inherent potential—based on safety and evidence—rather than forcing it to be stimulated.
At Bianca Clinic, too, rather than simply aiming for temporary improvements in performance, we place great importance on comprehensively optimizing brain health by addressing factors such as sleep, nutrition, and hormonal balance.
What BIANCA CLINIC Means by “Brain Conditioning”

What I value most in my practice is the idea that “the brain, just like the body, needs to be kept in good condition.” The goal is not to subject the brain to intense stimulation simply to improve concentration or memory. First and foremost, it is important to create an environment where the brain can fully utilize its natural capabilities.
First, lay the foundation with sleep, nutrition, and hormones
The most important factor in supporting brain function is the foundation of your lifestyle. If you don’t get enough sleep, no matter how effective the nutrients you consume may be, they will struggle to deliver their full benefits.
In addition, nutritional status—including magnesium, B vitamins, EPA, and DHA—as well as hormonal balance—such as thyroid hormones and testosterone—are also closely linked to brain health.
During my consultations, I place the utmost importance on “getting the foundation right first.”
Rather than forcing the brain to work, we bring out its natural potential
Just hearing the term “smart drugs” might lead some people to imagine them as “medications that force the brain to become more active.”
However, that is not the approach I am aiming for.
The philosophy of Bianca Clinic is to bring out the brain’s inherent potential through methods tailored to each individual, while regulating sleep, nutrition, and hormonal balance.
The concept of “stacks,” which can be combined to suit specific purposes
Brain health cannot be optimized by relying on just one ingredient. For this reason, the concept of “stacking”—combining multiple ingredients to suit specific goals—is widely adopted overseas.
If you want to improve your concentration or performance

When the goal is to improve concentration or work performance, a "stack" that combines stimulating and relaxing effects in a balanced way is sometimes used.
For example, caffeine and L-theanine are a classic combination. By combining the stimulating effects of caffeine with the properties of L-theanine, this combination is popular among people who want to work while staying relaxed.
In addition, research is underway on Bacopa as an ingredient that supports memory and cognitive function, and on Rhodiola rosea as an ingredient that helps alleviate fatigue and maintain a positive state of mind.
If you want to manage stress or improve your mental well-being

When it comes to stress management, Ashwagandha and Lion’s Mane mushroom are gaining attention. These have been studied for their potential to promote relaxation and a sense of well-being, and are often included in health-conscious supplements.
It's important to choose the right combination for your needs
It's not about which ingredient is superior, but rather "what the goal is" that matters.
Do you want to improve your concentration, reduce stress, or maintain your cognitive function?
The best combination varies depending on the purpose.
At Bianca Clinic, we also place great importance on providing recommendations tailored to each patient’s concerns and lifestyle.
To Avoid Using Smart Drugs on Your Own Initiative
In recent years, it has become possible to import certain products from overseas for personal use; however, some of these products contain ingredients that have been flagged for their potential to cause dependence or side effects. You should avoid using prescription medications without a doctor’s guidance or using products whose safety has not been confirmed.
At Bianca Clinic, we propose the approach best suited to each individual after verifying its safety and quality. Brain health is a crucial factor not only for short-term performance but also for future well-being. That is why it is important to consult with a doctor and choose the approach that is right for you.
Questions and Answers from the Seminar
During the seminar, we received questions about smart drugs and nootropics. Here, we’ll highlight some of the most common ones.
QDo smart drugs still work even when you're sleep-deprived?
If you’re experiencing chronic sleep deprivation, improving your sleep should be your top priority. On the other hand, in situations where you need to perform at your best temporarily—such as before an exam—it’s also a valid approach to use methods that prioritize safety.
However, this is strictly an exceptional situation; in everyday life, getting enough sleep is essential.
QDo the effects of smart drugs vary by age?
Although there are only a limited number of studies that clearly demonstrate age-related differences, it is possible that changes in nutritional status and hormonal balance that occur with aging may make it more difficult to achieve the expected results.
Therefore, rather than judging based solely on age, it’s important to understand your own condition.
Q10Are there any ingredients that can be used even at this age?
It depends on the ingredient. For example, bacopa, yamabushitake, and L-theanine are generally considered relatively easy to use, but the appropriate type and amount vary depending on age and purpose.
When considering whether to use this product, do not rely solely on your own judgment; consult a professional as needed.
Understanding Smart Drugs Correctly and Considering Brain Longevity

What I value most in aesthetic medicine is not simply “gaining temporary bursts of focus.” My goal is to support your overall performance in life—not just at work or in your studies, but beyond that as well.
Just like the body, when you take care of your brain’s daily well-being, it becomes easier for it to reach its full potential.
At Bianca Clinic, we offer aesthetic medicine services that support health from both mental and physical perspectives, tailored to each individual’s goals and lifestyle.
In the years ahead, it will be important not just to work hard, but also to focus on maintaining optimal brain health. I believe that this is the essence of “longevity”—a new way of thinking that supports brain conditioning and leads to a healthy, fulfilling life that is true to oneself.
